I was curious to find out how prices for football compared to forty years ago.

Just a quick comparison and the result is of no surprise. In 1973 when Hibs played Leeds Utd I believe the adult price for entry was 50p. I suppose I must have paid that as I was too old for a liftover. My weekly wage at that time was £15 so that would have bought me 30 tickets.

Going by the same logic a 17 year old would have to be earning nearly £700 a week nowadays so do the same.

England v Scotland international about the same time. £1. Yes £1

The cost to a club putting a match on is vastly different compared to back then.

What would 50 pence in 1973 be now with inflation?

It was a working man's game (very few women went to football back then I imagine) and the price of a pint or two was equal to the cost of admission.

Very similar for most, I'd imagine, with only a few superstars earning big money. George Best earned £1000 per week in 1970; a wage that was considered crazy.

It would be around £6 in today's money I believe. Imagine getting in for that every week!

£4.23 according to an online calculator. So about eight times more than 1973.

3 pints up town, Rutland Hotel, Rose Revived and Ma Scotts was 48p.

I don't drink there anymore.

I remember football used to be the same price as a packets of fags. Don't know what that would equate to now?

Don't know about 40 years ago but I had my first ST around 25 years ago and it cost me £40. This was a kids ST though (I was 14/15 that season) but what I also remember is I could get a bottle of Buckfast, a bottle of cheap cider and 10 fags for a fiver. Made my weekend.
Following season my ST went up to £75 for some reason (still a kids).

I used to pay 1/6d or 7.5p to get into Old Trafford in the mid 1960s when Law, Charlton and Best were playing!
