Apparently went shopping and by the time he came back the buses had left. He was on the bus to liege for the next game and said he had to go into Budapest to the British embassy.

I went with the Stanton branch. Was only 18 at the time and my mate got tonsilitis 2 days before the trip, so couldn't travel. I still went on my own and a number of themore seasoned campaigners on the bus took me under their wing. Great laughs. There was no beer, wine or vodka left in our hotel after the game - we drank the lot. And that was after 3 trips to "borrow" from the bar next door. A fabulous trip.

Listened to the game on the radio at Spike Mandelas house with a few other Hibbies, all sat round wearing our Hibs scarfs!!! Had to bring all the beer as usual🍻. Went out to the pubs in Alloa in celebration after. A great night. Went to Liege in the next round as my first Euro trip

Why do you bother following hibs ? With your miserable attitude you would be better suited to following a different club. Barcelona ?

They should make half & half scarves for Old Firm fans - loads of seats at both so you could attend whichever is playing at home.

The locals would love it.

Just the one bus Flanny. A great bunch of guys from Dalkeith & Bonnyrigg joined us and jumped on the bus at The Unicorn in Dalkeith. Vienna going, the Houchy Houchy Hotel and Nuremburg on way back. Think I had no more than a combined total of 10 hours sleep that week!!

If you recall, the toilet was blocked before we left the City boundary (the culprit was a plumber as well).

Always maintained this was one of Scottish football's best away results in Europe. Previous season Videoton had reached the UEFA cup final losing to Real.

Stayed first night in Budapest and second night in Shekesferavar (sp) in players hotel. Ended up going for a walk round town with Graham Mitchell and Calum Milne who were getting up to no good after a few beers.

Also remember Andy Goram returning with a very drunk Gordon Hunter who wasn't a big drinker. Bad influence those 2 goalies

Just an amazing trip.

That wasn't the previous season, it was much earlier in the 80s - 1983 perhaps?

442 magazine did a feature on it relatively recently. They actually beat Real in the Bernabeu in the 2nd leg, but had already screwed it up in the home leg.

Never checked the stats but the travelling Hibs support that evening was allegedly the largest visiting Videoton for a European game, more than MUFC from the previous season.

Very true. Just checked and it was apparently the 84-5 season they played Real in the final.
