Evening troops,

About to have a lumbar puncture done for the first time and thought I'd spook myself by asking how painful it is? Anybody had one in the past?

Is there a particular tune this should be sung to?

Evening troops,

About to have a lumbar puncture done for the first time and thought I'd spook myself by asking how painful it is? Anybody had one in the past? it's not how I'd choose to spend my weekend, but it's not too bad. You will likely receive a strong local anaesthetic which will numb the worst of the pain (although I found that to sting more than any other part of the procedure). I found it helpful to have one side of the bed raised so I could hold on for dear life, but that was always just because the idea of needle was intimidating.

When the needle penetrates in between the vertebrae it can feel like a bad muscular ache, but it passes. If the needle scrapes the bone it is a very odd sensation, unpleasant, but not really sore, just sends a bit of a shiver.

I had about 15 doses of chemo through this method. After the first few, you realise that the fear is the worst bit. Depending on body fat, hydration and various other factors, it may take more than one attempt to locate the gap between vertebrae, so try not to worry if it takes a few tries.

I've had one, just shy of two years ago. It hurt, but not terribly. Known as a spinal tap. Dr asked me how much it hurt out of ten, I said 11/11. He didn't get it. Gutted.

I work hard to bring up my two kids the right way in our own home. I'll be £1500 worse off due to my tax credits being slashed.

"Britain is getting a pay rise".

**** off you tory ****s. **** them all and everyone who voted for them.

Is this your way of saying that the budget is more painful than a lumbar puncture?

:agree: This sums it up.

Had four injections while I waited for a discectomy for two prolapsed discs.

Horrific is an understatement it was worse than that. Sorry bud.

Don't like to cheer you up, but I had a needle shoved into my back before my hip op and it was utterly painful and nauseating. Then she had a second go....

Then there was the kidney stone. Now that was pain!

I had one done in 2002 when diagnosed with epilepsy, it was sore and uncomfortable, worse thing was having 15 students in the room and flashing my backside off to anyone walking past the room!

Hopefully they give you something to numb the area and painkillers

I had a lumbar puncture last October. 6 attempts and two doctors later it was done but I wouldn't say it was without pain.
Then the following day I got a headache. It lasted over a week and nearly drove me demented. Apparently quite common after a LP. The only relief I got was lying horizontal, drinking coffee (of all things) oh yeah and a bucket load of tramadol.
Longest 10 days ever.

Hope yours goes ok! :aok:

My partner had one a few months ago and according to her it wasn't too bad .... she is quite slim and I think that helps. Mind you, she's a toughie as well and rarely complains when she is in pain :greengrin

Good luck mate.
