Never heard it myself.

I tend to mumble swearwords under my breath when stuck for a name.

It's in the Concise Scots Dictionary, right enough. It can either mean what the boy says it means here, or a "tuft of hair or wool at an animal's tail which has become matted with excrement or mud" or the torn trailing edges of a dirty piece of cloth.

Never heard of it before.

My mum writes these as well as her workmate. If she did this one its amusing cause she is the worlds worst for forgetting peoples name.

Mirriam-Webster word of the day email is good.

I've yet to use palimpsest in a conversation, though.
