Tbh whilst I think the current honours system is a bit outdated I do think recognition for ordinary people who do good work in their communities is a good thing.

I know someone who has been given an MBE this time around and, whilst I'm sure it will be pointed out lots of people do what she does etc, it's thoroughly deserved and she's rightly chuffed to get it.

I used to always say if I was ever offered an honour, highly unlikely, I'd refuse it on principle but I've softened a bit as a lot of very deserving people get recognised through the system.

Several years ago I asked my boss who has the MBE to sign my passport photo thinking surely he would be credible enough. It was returned to me as he was not,I kicked up hell to no avail. Several years later guess what.........People with the MBE can now sign passport photos.

There's nothing wrong with some sort of state sponsored recognition of those who do good work, but there's everything wrong with the current system of doing so in this country.

I can agree with that - no problem. It's the 'celebs', bankers, politicians and vastly overpaid sportsmen that get these things that really irritates me.
These 'personality' awards are generally done by somebody who can 'fix it' for you (ironically coining a once-famous person's catchphrase).

My view is that ones like this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-33116475 are worthy

I don't agree with a monarchy and even less so about the accolades they dish out to people they've never heard, seen, met or care about. Independence without the monarchy for me.

Honours are a recognition of achievements nominated by ordinary people, they are dished out by the monarchy in name only.

My uncle was awarded the MBE after spending thirty years in the navy, it was a brilliant punctuation mark on his career within that. All for the honours.

I was disappointed to see Paul Kenny General Secretary of the GMB accept a knighthood. Not many in TU movement would accept one

They are not for me I'm afraid. I have no real problem with society recognising service and achievement, but doing it in this way is outdated and in the case of knighthoods and peerages discredited. In fact I have little doubt that some people at the very top of society have failed to rock the boat when they should have for fear of putting their chances of a knighthood or peerage in jeopardy ..... that cant be good.

Not just that, but the names of the awards...... British 'Empire' medal ... Member of the British 'Empire' .... Order of the British 'Empire' .... What empire ?

Even with awards for gallantry its often down to opinion. I well remember a number of years ago a young nursery worker fighting off a maniac with a machete who was trying to hurt the kids ... she had managed to get them out of the room and even though she could have escaped herself she chose to stay and stop the guy getting to the kids by fighting him off with her bare hands. She was awarded a George medal, what the hell do you have to do to get a George Cross?
