Met my wife in the Venue but it was The Jailhouse then.
The Hoochie Coochie club above Coasters was good for bands.

I miss the venue, really was a great place for gigs despite the pole at the front of the stage!

Edinburgh has always been crap when it comes to music venues and it's worse now than it's ever been.

I wouldn't say it's always been crap, seen some fantastic stuff in Edinburgh.
Venues come and go all the time. I do think that some younger peeps have higher expectations of a venues' facilities than my generation had, when it was all about the music and you'd go to any old dive to hear it - but some of those dives were glorious. The concept of "V.I.P." has changed a lot since then.
This site has some great memorabilia.

One of my favourite venues was Valentino's, a venue that seemed central for a variety of musics but was flattened by the end of 1982 - look at some of the names who played there in the early 80's.

Edinburgh was well served in the 60s and 70s with every cinema and theatre hosting gigs from some of the biggest names in the business. That was in the days when bands were happy to play in the Odeon or the Caley in front of 800 punters rather than squeeze 50,000 into a football stadium to squeeze their wallets.

I loved the calton studios in the early 90s, I had some memorable nights in there.

I remember seeing Blazing Saddles in there when it was a cinema. There was two of us there, including the projectionist!!
My favourite venue and the place where I really got into live music as La Sorbonne.
Played there twice myself. Great place for Edinburgh bands.
