When UCD began their first season in Ireland's First Division since 2009 it would have been fair for defender Tomás Boyle, striker Ryan Swan and manager Collie O'Neill to assume that they wouldn't be joining Cork City, Shamrock Rovers and Saint Patrick's Athletic as Ireland's representatives in the Europa League 2015-16. They hadn't progressed in the FAI Cup, and had finished second from bottom in the league. When the news came through that the Students had finished third behind Dundalk and Cork, who were already in European competition, in Ireland's "fair play" league, they were sitting 3rd in the Irish second tier. Their average crowd is approximately 200, their record home attendance after moving to their new "Belfield Bowl" stadium is 3,000 when Shamrock Rovers won the league in the South Dublin venue.

After their 4-1 victory against second place Wexford Youths, I caught up with the aforementioned players to discuss, amongst other things, their thoughts on Europa League qualification.

Good luck to them.

They play exceptional football to watch, but honestly, I think even the Lichtenstein team will prove too much for them. They are an amateur college side.
