When UCD began their first season in Ireland's First Division since 2009 it would have been fair for defender Tomás Boyle, striker Ryan Swan and manager Collie O'Neill to assume that they wouldn't be joining Cork City, Shamrock Rovers and Saint Patrick's Athletic as Ireland's representatives in the Europa League 2015-16. They hadn't progressed in the FAI Cup, and had finished second from bottom in the league.
