As you come to the end of the M8 and also at other junctions there are signs showing Bypass North and Bypass South, South being towards sheriff hall, North towards the Gyle.

It got me thinking, surely East and West would be a better description and more accurate and according to my phone maps I'm correct.

So why North/South sign posts?

North for heading towards the Forth Bridges, South for the A1 and England.
