This has probably been covered before, but didn't realise that we need to win the Cup to get into Europe, runners-up (even to Celtic) wouldn't get in.

This is not true.

If the runners up of the cup are NOT In European football, regardless of league they have to be put into the competition as the Cup entrants. It's only if the runners up are also in Europe that it would go to 4th place.

The article quoted in the OP doesn't cover this but is a UEFA rule that all associations must submit at least ONE cup entrant to European competition. The SFA can't change it, unless they award it to the League cup winners, which would have to be announced and agreed well in advance.

I don't have the time to find it but this is definitely the case.

UEFA changed the rules last year:

• Performances in domestic leagues will be rewarded. If a national cup winner has booked a UEFA Champions League spot, the highest-ranked club in their domestic league not already qualified for the UEFA Europa League will qualify for the competition; national cup runners-up no longer qualify.

had time to do some digging. his ruling actually does apply to this seasons Scottish cup. So I will hold my hands up :aok:
http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/executive-committee/news/newsid=1999120.html

"Beginning with the 2015–16 UEFA Europa League (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/2015%E2%80%9316_UEFA_Europa_League), should the domestic cup winners already qualify for the Champions League or Europa League via their domestic league position, the cup runners-up will no longer be granted a spot in the Europa League, and the spot will be given to the highest-placed team in the league which has not yet qualified for European competitions"

If we win the cup, the last thing I'll be thinking about is qualification for Europe. :agree:

Im sure Baldy Foghorn asked Leeann Dempster this very question . She told him Hibs would qyalify if they faced Celtic in the final , irrespective of the result .

I did ask, she said yes at that time. The rule has been changed, and she now knows we have to win the trophy to enter into Europe......

Well if the players want to play in Europe with Hibs next season , they know what they have to do . Might be a blessing this new rule 😃
Just need to make sure we get to the final first . Cmon the famous Hibernian .
