Reading his comments, it's good to see that he's gone out with his dignity intact.

I know a lot of people don't like him and I agree he is a bit of an arse, however Top Gear is the only show I go out of my way to watch these days. I find most of the stuff on TV pish and if he is gone then I will miss the show big time. It will need to be something pretty special to replace it IMO.

I've been reflecting on this today. I have had a good laugh at myself: I wanted him sacked for his racism, but I think it's unfair that he gets the bullet for banjoing his boss. Thankfully I can see the irony.

I'm the same, top gear is my favourite show. If they try and make it with three new presenters it won't be the same IMO.

Call me cynical but this is a programme that couldn't buy the PR and advertising they've had in the past few years...

Last season the Falklands fiasco, the year before that the racism furore and now this - Clarkson et al have become so popular that if the BBC punt them, I'd be willing to bet someone else will take the trio on in another show.

Chris Evans the early favourite to replace him apparently.

Personally I think they should go for Steve Coogan in full Alan Partridge mode. The 'banter' would probably be comparable to Clarksons imo.

I can't stand Clarkson or what he represents and I don't watch Top Gear because of him.

If he gets replaced, I'll tune in.

Top Gear is *****, and the "predicaments" they find themselves in are are more staged than an episode of Eastenders.

Dull show with dull patter from presenters up each other's dull jaxis.

That could describe any BBC magazine show I suppose.

Couldn't care less if they make it again or not. If I want to watch cars there are plenty out on the street.

Clarkson's face is too big for telly anyway, they should confine him to radio.

We might end up with both. May and Hammond are both out of contract and will probably follow Clarkson to Sky or wherever he ends up. I like Chris Evans but I always feel that after a while of doing something it tends to become more about himself than anything else.

Nailed it, and as time has passed the staged stuff is getting more ridiculous, almost like it is a kids show. As for Clarkson I'm neither here nor there but if they did sack him I don't think it will affect the popularity of the shower.

Of course it's staged but most things on TV are. I've not got a problem with that. I think the early shows weren't as staged as they are now, but after 22 series that's always going to be the case. I look at top gear more as an entertainment show than a factual one.

If someone punches a member of staff at their work for not providing hot food after a days work, you'd fairly expect them not to have a job afterwards.

It really doesn't matter if 1m people have signed a petition set up by some right wing blogger, I'd bet if they all took a punch in the face from Clarkson that number would be far lower. In fact, those who have sent insults and death threats to the producer on the wrong end of it are rather morally questionable.

hmmm....so are you including his use of the "n" word, his nazi salutes? the Hyundai company complaining of his racist and bigoted language, his falklands reg plate in Argentina? His punching of a producer??

so there's a little taste of the man....I wonder why people don't like him?- he seems such a great guy.....

The only people who find his language racist and bigoted are people looking to be offended. He says and does lots of things to provoke a reaction which is part of his appeal. Whenever he says something there's a queue of people lining up to stick the boot in.

If he was as bad as people here make out then why is he so popular all around the world. If I'm being honest I cringe at some of the things he says and does but I always find myself tuning in.

Really?

I don't want to be offended by anyone, but I don't want to hear high profile people on the BBC use terms like "Slope" and "******". Clarkson regularly says offensive things.

His one-eyed Scottish idiot remark was also a belter. Not only does he know he's said something offensive, he repeats it a moment later. He actually did the same with the "Slope" comment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs7V-hnTV30

He says and does lots of things to provoke a reaction which is part of his appeal.

It certainly doesn't appeal to me.

Anyone can say offensive things. Anyone.

And to do so deliberately "to provoke a reaction" isn't justification.

It makes him the worst kind of troll.

Whenever he says something there's a queue of people lining up to stick the boot in.

You're blaming people for finding his offensive comments offensive.

The criticisms arrive when Clarkson says something offensive. It's not the complainants' fault.

I bet there are no complaints when he decides not to be offensive.

If he was as bad as people here make out then why is he so popular all around the world.

Popularity is no measure of decency.

Bernard Manning was rich and very popular. As was Jimmy Saville.

If I'm being honest I cringe at some of the things he says and does but I always find myself tuning in.

If he stuck to reviewing cars and stopped spouting his racist, sexist and right wing views, more people would tune in. Possibly even me.

Is that right...so if you find the n word or the term "slope" racist it's because you are lining up to stick in the boot ...well , that's new logic to me

I like Chris Evans but I'm surprised he's took this job. He will have to change the format completely IMO or it won't work. I look forward to seeing the show when it comes back on. Does anyone know when that will be?

I suppose Evans has the credentials to successfully re invent the show. To be honest I found it a bit tired anyway so hopefully this will freshen up things.
