this must be one of United's blackest weeks ever. not an admirer of their club,or fans in anyway as I've thought they got off lightly against us in the 80's with the relegation etc. however, they seem to have folded like a pack of cards, of late. handing over your best 2 players to a major rival midway through a season looks like playing Russian roulette, and they've choose the full chamber.

Law of averages. We have to beat them sometime.

There's no such thing as 'the law of averages'.

Toss a coin 100 times. Suppose it lands heads-up 100 times. On the 101st toss, the odds on whether it lands heads-up or tails-up are exactly the same - evens.

Football matches aren't decided randomly - the quality of the respective teams, how well each team plays on the day, the way each team handles the playing conditions, the decisions given to each team by the referee, lots of things are relevant. The mythical 'law of averages' isn't.

It doesn't exist.

But we do need to beat Celtic some time though and what better time to do it than the Scottish Cup final in May 2015!?

I reckon if we go up at the expense of Sevco and win the cup at the expense of Celtic and stop them winning the treble it will be almost the perfect year.

What we NEED to do and what we WILL do are two separate and often quite different things.

IF we meet Celtic in the Cup Final (remember, we can't assume we're going to get past Falkirk in the semi - we haven't beaten them yet this season, IIRC) we'll have to play at the top of our form, and Celtic will need to be well below their best if we're going to have a chance of winning the game. Not impossible, but that, realistically, is the situation.

But the idea that sooner or later we're 'bound' to beat any other team 'on the law of averages' is rubbish.

But we do need to beat Celtic some time though and what better time to do it than the Scottish Cup final in May 2015!?

I reckon if we go up at the expense of Sevco and win the cup at the expense of Celtic and stop them winning the treble it will be almost the perfect year.

Hear Hear! We can do it! I don't see why not.

Mind you I'd be happy if we just took Hearts to the cleaners in April.

Remember the spate of finals we had against them and thought as a young teenager that was how it would always be ,but am 57 now so no glory hunter .Yep folk saying we need to beat them sometime in a Final but have had too many heartaches along the way since then to start thinking about a Final before we are in one .
A bit of me feels we don't yet have depth of squad to fight on two fronts if Promotion is Priority ,but whatever will be will be ,and irrespective the likes of me and you will be back next season supporting the club ,and that's as it should be .:flag:

There's no such thing as 'the law of averages'.

Toss a coin 100 times. Suppose it lands heads-up 100 times. On the 101st toss, the odds on whether it lands heads-up or tails-up are exactly the same - evens.

Football matches aren't decided randomly - the quality of the respective teams, how well each team plays on the day, the way each team handles the playing conditions, the decisions given to each team by the referee, lots of things are relevant. The mythical 'law of averages' isn't.

It doesn't exist.

I disagree, probability and frequency are to me part of the law of averages.

It's not really the only way. I've seen us play them twice in cup finals and get gubbed both times.

I'd quite like to try playing a team we can beat. That's our best chance of winning the thing.

I've seen Hibs play Celtic in 3 Scottish Cup finals - lost them all (6-1, 3-0, & 3-0); and 3 League Cup finals - lost 2 (6-2 & 6-3) and won 1 (2-1). I'm not counting Dryborough cups here.

I know who I would like Hibs to play in the final, should they get there, and it's not Celtic. Hibs rarely do themselves justice at Hampden against Celtic.

The worst capitulation was when an excellent Hibs team (who outclassed Rangers in the semi-final IIRC) lost the 1971/2 Scottish Cup final 6-1 in front of 106,000 spectators. I don't think Hibs have ever had as big a support at a football match before or since that day. So many travelled to Hampden thinking that finally Hibs really could / would win it.

There is no evidence because nobody actually counted as far as I know, but the chat at the time was that Hibs had 50,000 at the 1971/2 Scottish Cup final, in a crowd given as 106,000. Some say it was actually more than that.

I was at the game with my late father and his mates and a couple of my pals. I've never seen such a huge travelling Hibs support at any game, and that includes the number at the Livingston final.

Did Hibs take more than 40,000 to the Livingston final?

I would be surprised if Hibs had anywhere near half the crowd in the 6 1 game. Was there and don't remember our equaliser being celebrated hugely unlike when Celtc scored.

Think there was about 40k for Livi final.

I was also there and there were no where near 50k Hibs fans. It was reported 35k at the time, which looked about right towards the end of the match when the Celtic fans decided to sing a few songs - got to say it was impressive.

When Alan Gordon equalised I agree there wasn't the same noise as when Celtic scored. That was not uncommon in those days, as both Celtic & Rangers supporters had a reputation for violence much worse than they have today. There was no strict segregation of supporters in those days of course, and often opposition supporters were intimidated into keeping quiet (even at their own home games).

At the final we are talking about, trouble broke out on the terracing where I was standing, and we had to get onto the track to avoid the bottles and missiles flying between both sets of supporters.

We actually walked round the track and out the ground at 4-1. Never saw the rest of the game but it was all over anyway by then.

50,000 is what I recall being said at the time. If there wasn't that number it wouldn't have been all that many short of that IMO.

I know, the first part of my post wasn't entirely serious. :greengrin

Funnily enough, i was there. I can't really believe that myself now, but one of my best mates was a Hibby and his dad worked as a caretaker (I think) for Sport Scotland in the New Town. Anyway he got us tickets and i travelled through, 4 years after I had seen hearts beat by Dunfermline.

I can only really remember two things - the dust coming up off the terraces - it was a hot day and there was no protection and the mud turned to dust

And probably as a result of that, thought he way the game was going can't have helped, my mates dad had a heart attack and i ended up on my own as a 15 year old on the terraces while my mate went down to the first aid room with his dad

Looking back it was an awful day for my mate but a bit of a hazy memory for me of watching Dixie Deans,Macari and Dalgleish run riot, feeling sorry for my mate, worrying about his dad, feeling guilty about worrying how I was going to get home and trying to look unhappy about the way the game was going.

it was a good Hibs side but looking at the team sheet a better Celtic one

Hard to imagine 15 year olds going to watch the other side in a cup final these days

You're right there. I was at both games too involving the Edinburgh teams - clearly recall the 2-1 defeat to Dunfermline for your lot and the devastating 6-1 loss, with all the fighting and spilling on to the park at our game ... I remember a lot of banter between our rival fans back then, but the current "hatred" between the Edinburgh fans is not something I was aware of all those years ago: changed days indeed.

:agree: You're right, there were a number of "neutrals" supporting Hibs that day too. It would never happen today. Changed days indeed, and not always for the better sadly.

That Celtic team was a very good side, managed by Jock Stein. It has to be remembered it was only 5 years earlier they had won the European Cup, and lost in another final I think in 1970 when they were favourites to win it for a second time. Nonetheless, Hibs in those days were a match for anyone, on their day. However, that day Hibs just never turned up.

I hope things turned out OK for your mate's dad I should of course say.

I know exactly what you mean about trying to look unhappy the way the game was going. :greengrin That happened to me a couple of times in those days too during games against the Old Firm when completely surrounded by them. Many of them out of their heads on the bevvy.

You sure you clearly recall it?

The score was 3-1 Dunfermline.

Gardner (2) and Lister (pen) for the Fifers; a John Lunn OG for the Jambos.

I was where a Hi-bee was supposed to be that afternoon - at ER watching a 3-3 draw with Killie. Colin Stein scored a hat-trick.
