Extract from "At Easter Road They Play"
The following Monday evening ensured that the date 21 April 1949 would attain huge significance in the history of Hibernian Football Club. Fulfilling an obligation to play a friendly match in the Borders against Nithsdale Wanderers, Hibs duly obliged by thrashing their hosts 8-1 but it was not the scoreline that would hold any significance but rather the names of the Hibs forwards that night. For the first time, Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond would play as a unit and little did those present realise that the names of those Famous Five would be talked of in decades for the years ahead. For the records Thomson scored for Nithsdale whilst Ormond 2, Turnbull 2, Reilly 2, Mick Gallagher and Smith netted for Hibs.
