It always amazes me how the economy and its attachments are full of positive news before an election then after it we're told how dire the situation really is.

Btw, I have been known to shop at "Cynics R Us"

You are right to be cynical but not even politicians can make the markets move to their whim...well OK they get the central bankers to do that for them but the bull run in equities has been going a bit longer than just this month!

We only borrowed 74 billion this year, what could possibly go wrong?

You are actually closer to the truth than ya think ;-)

When you look at how much UK debt is owned by the BoE then a huge chunk of it is actually borrowed from ourselves!

Another chunk has just been borrowed from pensioners are preferential rates (for them!) which no matter how it's dressed up is a disgrace...why the hell should the UK tax payer pay a premium interest rate to pensioners who can afford to lock away 20k for 3 years! The Tories know they need the grey vote and boy they also know how to use every trick in the book to get it!

Who the IFS?

No idea but I'll hazard a guess that they're not apolitical.

Don't hazard a guess...they are explicitly a non political not for profit organisation.

That's not to say everything they produce is accurate or can't be challenged but there is a big difference between that and suggesting they are somehow in cahoots with the government of the day.
