Stumbled across this article about Argentinian football. They have agreed a 30 team top division to spread the wealth and to get more of the smaller teams involved. Makes a mockery of the SPLF decision not to go to 16 team top division

Not really making a mockery of the SPFL decision. I understand you can compare the principal of league expansion, but Argentinean football has a wealth of massive clubs, produces a conveyor belt of talented youngsters, and has support derived from the community in which the club is based - none of which exist in Scotland. The product over there is worth buying into from a media point of view, so the money to support a 30 team league probably will not be hard to source. At a time when we can't attract sponsors for our league and cup competitions, I think league expansion would have killed professional football in this country within the next 5 years if it had happened.

The Argentinians had a similar situation to us when River Plate got relegated and the Boca-River derby was under threat. But as nameless says the parallels end there, its a bigger country with well supported teams and a massive worldwide tv audience. (River just bought David Trezeguet to get them back up in a move reminiscent of the huns' capture of Kris Boyd). :greengrin

I love this Teofilo Gutierrez boy. The Colombian Sparky.

Agreed a 16 team league is a must. We cant really compare ourselves to Argentina though, for a kick off half the top flight teams play in one city with nearly twice the population of our 5 biggest cities combined.

Also 50% of Argentinan fans don't spend their waking hours wetting themselves about Brazilian fitba and supporting Fluminense or Santos in front of the telly.

The point I'm trying make is if they can have a 30 team league then surely we can have a 16 team league. The Premiership would enhanced if Hibs , them, Rangers and Falkirk

I don't understand that - they've currently got 20 teams, they're expanding it to 30 but with a long term view to potentially reduce it back to 20?

They had only 20 teams last season and they only played each other once. Once the 19 games were finished they started it over again.

There is also no away fans in Argentina due to trouble. Its also cheap to get a ticket for locals.

But why are they expanding to 30 teams, only to reduce it again at a later date?
