View Full Version : The Spirit Of '86!

Time I think for the Yams to take courage & look back to their finest hour in 1985/86 when they went 31 games undefeated & yet still managed to lose the league! Given they only managed a paltry 20 (league) games undefeated this season it should be well within their capabilities to throw away the title & give Craig Levein a remarkable double success as player & puppeteer! There would surely be no more fitting way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this stunning achievement by spending it enjoying another season in the Championship! Go on boys, you can do it!!

T'would be a mighty feat indeed, but I can't think of a more world-renowned club, with 400,000 fans united as one behind them,
better equipped to take on this task.
They wouldn't even have to cheat.

It seems unlikely, but it has to be said that if there is one club capable of upsetting these odds its the Yams. Our own club let us down a lot more regularly than the Yams let down their fans. But it has to be said that when the Yams do it, its on an epic scale.

As much as it is would be wonderful they are not going to throw that big a lead away. The bigger problem is our own inconsistency. We have struggled at home in the majority of our games. I do think that we will catch Rangers though. What I will say is Hearts next game away at Alloa is a big one.

I can recall getting off the bus around Mayfield Rd to play golf at Prestonfield. Each week Id go past a garage with the weeks yam result scribed up in felt tip.

Its a pity I don't recall how that series ended up and how soon after it was white-washed :) surely I can't have been the only Hibby to remember this?

You know it's a terrible time to go on a wobbly. It would take a collapse of epic proportions and that would have been a shame if it weren't the unwashed.

It's a little known fact their 86 escapades provided inspiration for Volkswagen.

"The more things change the more they stay the same" as one of their French signings used to say ;)

Agreed, Hibs let Us down on a regular basis but after a while, you learn to expect it - 'THEM' on the other hand ??. Every time they go on a good run, boy, do they shout it from the roof-tops - listening to them the now you'd think Barcelona/Real Madrid etc are s*****g themselves !!. A support totally incapable of learning it's lesson from history - and long may that continue !. They're doing well just now, which is typical of their luck but - and it's a big 'BUT' - sooner or later, the effects of 'Playing within their means' will eventually be felt. For the majority of them, used to 30+ years of players who would've never touched them with a barge-pole were it not for the (other people's) money they flung about - the culture-shock will be too much !!

Picture the scenario . Hearts just need to draw their last game of the season to win the league . Were 3pts behind and 7 goals worse off . They lose 1-0 to a 94m goal . We win 7-0 .

Would be absolutely hilarious if they were to loose the league after being so far ahead but sadly it is highly highly unlikely. At least now though their incredibly tedious "we are unbeatable" patter is put to bed.

Son-in-law (who is a Yam) has been saying for weeks they have been poor recently and lucky to have got some of the results they've managed.

Think they've started to believe their own hype. A slippery, slippery slope may lie ahead. :greengrin

Falkirk with the addition of Thier new players have imo fired themselves into top four contention ahead of queens .
When the yams have had a set back they have responded by winning the next game and shown no sign of going into free fall . So next game is a big one for them .

Never thought they would go whole season unbeaten and they will drop more points but it's still a mountain to climb for us to get anywhere near them unless they don't handle the pressure and the wheels come off the bandwagon .There is hope but there are t enough good teams in the division to beat them

Sir Albert Kidd, not to be confused by Walter Kidd the HMOFC captain of that day. Walter, had a great chance with a long range effort to put the gorgie mob in front but failed to take it. I know him, spoke to him about it and know how much it hurt him, along with his mates and I still like to remind him. he is a jambo ,through and through and likes to hit me with various bad results against them but the 86, wont ever go away.

He can hit you with various bad results.

The fact remains: of that team/generation for all Robbos goals against us and jammy wins and draws including Berry breaking Paul Wrights leg (I believe he would have made the difference that day) those pesky opposition Hibs players actually won silverwear. Tennants sixes pfffft!

We should also remember that this season marks the 50th anniversary of Yams also losing the league on the last day & again by getting beat 2-0! I believe in the history of Scottish football Yams losing margin in 1965, 0.04 of a goal ( goal average ) was the lowest ever! They would have won the league on goal difference & in 1986 they would have won the league on goal average! Shame really!

The really HILARIOUS thing of that is, at the end of the previous season, the yams had lobbied - and won - to have the law changed from Goal-difference' to Goal- average ' - if they had left it alone, they would've won that league on 'Goal-difference !!

Are you sure that's right? I thought goal difference only came in after goal average went out. Way I remember it is that goal average was thought to favour defensive play (eg Killiemarnock in '65) to the detriment of attractive, swashbuckling, "you score four, we'll score five" fitba, and so goal average was abandoned in favour of goal difference. Similar argument as three-points-for-a-win. I don't think goal difference was ever dropped in favour of goal average.

If if they had only been beaten 7-2 by Dundee they would have won the league! They actually lost 7-1 at the PBS about 2 months befor the end of the season. In the 85/86 season IIRC they lost 6-1 in Paisley early in the season which made them even more bitter when Celtc won 5-0 there on the last day!

When they lost the league on goal average in the 60s , they complained that goal average was unfair . So it got changed to goal difference . Had it remained goal average they would have won the league in 86 .
Brilliant !
