St Johnstone sign young Spartans player

In the BBC article regarding this it says that St Johnstone beat off competition from Hearts, Hibs and Rangers to sign George Hunter, an 18 year old from Spartans. Does anybody know if this was just a marketing ploy by an agent to get him a contract with a bigger club or were we actually interested in signing the guy?
