I hope more people in this country know this than knew it was the American corporate greed day on Friday.

I suspect more people would know about thanksgiving, but the Burberry household will be celebrating our national day with a drop of whiskey and a large portion of haggis.

Would have thought a Scottish beverage would have been more appropriate for St Andrews day?

I would rather celebrate Scotland in January with Burns, the revolutionary genius, than a vague and somewhat inexplicable attachment to a religious figure with no Scottish connections. Weird!

Most countries have a national day and this is as good as any ... You have to go back a bit for the connection which is also the reason we have the Saltire. Very few countries have any actual connections to their patron saint ... England's probably didn't even exist.
Perhaps its time St Andrew's day was moved to the summer ... why the hell do we have to celebrate Burns and St Andrew too when its bloody Baltic.

Chicken with haggis stuffing for dinner, Aberlour 10 year old going down a treat.
The heart of the man, Saint Andrew, was brought to these shores by crusaders, allegedly. Saint Andrew was crucified on the saltire cross because he was not worthy of the same cross as Jesus of Nazareth. The saltire appeared in the sky before the battle of Prestonpans, becoming the flag of Scotland.

Sorry, pedantry kicks in ...

Prestonpans was a BPC Jacobite skirmish.
The legend that St Andrew's remains ended up in St Andrews is almost certainly total bollocks.
Every country has a national day but choosing ours as the feast day of an ancient religious figure with no Scottish connections (and in November at that) is just weird.

My excuse, I dropped history at the end of second year, in 1971. All of that was from my fuzzy recollections.
And we were never taught Scottish history.

The Saltire is now the flag of the blessed 45. Unless you voted yes you can't wave it.

If we'd voted YES then we could have binned it for Independence Day. St Andrews day doesn't really work in Scotland like St Patrick's day in Ireland. St Andrew is a Catholic Saint and unlike in Ireland we don't have a Catholic majority. A national day should be a day that unites a country instead of dividing it.

Indeed. We could change it to Union Day and celebrate it on 18th September. I'm sure a majority would get behind that

Unity Day - a day of celebrating Scottishness irrespective of politics, creed, colour or sex - would work for me.

That's not such a bad idea. We'll just have to change the name after independence. :greengrin

If we binned everything that of itself didn't make a difference to our lives what a borefest the word would be.

Ahem .... Battle at Athelstaneford (locally pronounced Elshinford) near Haddington. The Picts being the victors.
