Like all boys I have a lot to thank my mother for, including two football games I would have missed through my father being unavoidably detained and me not deemed old enough to be out on my own in those bovver boy-marauding early 1970s. First she revved up the 2CV for the bedlam of Brockville where we witnessed future knight of the realm Alex Ferguson being sent off for a headbutt in a five-goal thriller. Later it was the road and the miles to Dundee where Dens Park was packed tighter than a jar of the city’s best strawberry jam for a Scottish Cup tie won by the guile and goals of the man I’m meeting today.
