Tragic news, and a tragic accident, turned as the ball came at him and got him on the neck/skull at the back, no protection from the helmet there. Feel so sorry for all involved, the bowler is pretty distraught about it, hopefully he can get over it, it was an accident. Proof how dangerous cricket can be, its a hard ball travelling at 100mph.

Really tragic that someone can loose their life playing sport

Incredibly unlucky, totally shocked that this has happened. Apparently there is only one other recorded incident in cricket of the injury Phil suffered.

Was reading that earlier...and that there are only 100 record cases of the fatal injury he suffered. Life can be so cruel...

Thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Phil

Absolute tragedy, such a promising career to-date as well. But that's not really the point, a young man went out to do his job doing something he loved and died in a freak accident.

Feel for his poor family + friends, as well as the bowler who bowled the ball.

Whatever sport you're a fan of, it really is only a game.

Shocking to think that I'm only a few months older than him.

Even more shocking is that he could probably have faced exactly the same ball another million times and it wouldn't have resulted in such awful circumstances.

I've no doubt the authorities will be looking into the health and safety aspects in terms of the protective equipment that they wear in cricket and how it can be improved. However, sometimes you just have to put things down to nothing more than a freak and tragic accident.

I believe this is one such example of that.

Indeed.

The mood is decidedly somber down here, but I think everyone realises that with any sport, just as with crossing the road, there is an inherent risk involved.

Tragic it certainly is though.

Gone in a split second. It's surprising there haven't been more fatalities in cricket, particularly in the pre helmet era. No doubt manufacturers will be examining the design of their helmets.

Taken far too young. RIP.

An umpire at a cricket match in the Israeli city of Ashdod has died after being hit by a ball, reports say.
Witnesses say a fast delivery by the bowler came off the batsman's bat, striking the wicket and then the man.

hope it doesn't come in three's
