Hoping someone can help me here.
A client has some cash. He isn't, and never has been, a taxi driver.
Is he allowed to buy a taxi, not drive it, but get drivers in to operate it? If he is, does he need a licence?
Presumably, he also needs to buy the plate?
Any help would be appreciated.

I thought about doing this, but I haven't followed up on it.
Yes, is the answer to the first question.
He will also need to buy a plate, and a taxi.
I'm not sure what the licence requirements are though.

Yep, I have a friend who owns one but doesn't drive herself. Not sure it's that great an idea, as owners usually find that they cop all the hassle of maintenance, dealing with the radio companies, and drivers bumping them for rent. Double shifted, it might bring in a small income (one shift covers running costs, the second is income).
Most owners use the night shift to cover costs, and rely on day shift for their income. The only way to really make money is if you have dirty money that needs laundered.

I used to work in a taxi garage and we would have a look at the meters every now and again to see how much people were making. First thing on Monday morning after the cab had been used all weekend, the takings could be in the thousands. On a sunny day at half past four, one driver had made £1.75 all day. As someone else noted, it's the weekends mainly that earn the most, which is why it's normally the owners who do the day shift in between playing golf.:greengrin

You can do that but you wouldn't be able to have a taxi with city cabs as you're required to drive your taxi. You can get one with central or com cabs or a street cab

There must be better ways of investing money. Once all the running costs are paid there wouldn't be much left for him.

About twice as much as you'd clear through here. Is that 7 double shift rentals? Different rules for owning a plate, East Ayrshire you must have held a taxi drivers licence for at least a year before you can have a plate in your name.

That'd be renting it out 6 nights and 6 days to 2 drivers. Iit costs abour £1100 a month to keep a taxi on the road through here and you could realistically get £2300 in rent. You could go for m9re but it would mean having more drivers, but that would increase your insurance and also your chances of the taxi being in a bump. You don't need to hold a taxi license here to buy a plate, most plates are owned by a limited company that you set up before buying.

With the new ( lets face it ) zero drink driving limit now might just be the time to invest in a Taxi :greengrin

Good idea. Cabbies never get pulled over and breathalysed.

This new drink driving limit means I'll have to ditch my tried and tested five and drive policy.

Any time you have a bump all they want to know is when you started not how many pints you had before you did!
