It's in some mess with these pubs and bars putting decking and gazebos on the road. I thought it was supposed to be temporary, but I notice the road markings have been changed.

Edinburgh can't afford to have another road through town shut, not to mention the aesthetics of defiling a world heritage site.

As long as the players are happy.

PS Welcome back, Phil.

Believe it's a trail period until the end of the Festival next year (could be wrong about dates).

I don't really have a problem with the pedestrianisation of a street in the city centre, it's one of the things I like about Glasgow, but the current gazebos and decking look very cheap and nasty. I wonder if that will change if it gets the go ahead permanently.

I like it, would love to see more of the city centre pedestrianised it makes for a much better city centre.

I was saying the same thing to the wife the other day, potentially it could look pretty good, but just now it looks pretty amateurish. Can't blame the shops for not spending the money to fancy it up if it's just a trial period though I suppose.

It's a trial until September this year I believe, but the fact that they've already changed the road markings would suggest that they plan to keep it going for a while, which seems strange as I can't see many people wanting to sit outside during the winter.

Why they haven't pedestrianised the section between Hannover st and n castle at is beyond me...there really is no need for any traffic or parking on those sections. Would create a true public centre to the new town.

The problem is that cars can't drive on Princes street, so if you close of that section of George street everyone has to use Queen street.

Oh I agree...the princes st car ban was short sighted for that reason I would suggest...anyway I'm not sure anyone uses George St to traverse the city so I'm not sure it would have that large an impact removing what us largely people parking to go shopping and delivery vehicles (who could use thistle st lane etc)

just seems a shame to waste such a beautiful street for parking.

George Street was one of the only routes through the town. The traffict that used to use it is now displaced onto Princes Street. It wouldn't be as bad if the Royal Mile was open to traffic, or if the New Town hadn't been cordoned off to allow the residents there to have some peace.

The council has to work harder to balance the needs of residents needing to get around he city, with its relentless push to turn the town into a living Disneyland.

If they got rid of the parking down the middle of George street there would be enough room for pedestrians and cars, but the parking is making the council money so they won't get rid of it.

Ever since the congestion charge was rejected the council have made driving in the city centre a nightmare.

I worked at Haymarket with someone who lived in Portobello. When I though about her routes home, it was a choice of Queen Street, or the Cowgate. After that it was a case of crazy work arounds involving the meadows, the braids, Stockbridge or Leith.

By all means make the city centre tourist friendly, but don't make impossible for people to get there. There was a lot of difficulties on Princes Street this year caused by buses (usually out of town ones) blocking junctions.

To me there were too many buses - I have sympathy with drivers who have timetables to meet, and the longer their journey, the more impact delays will have.

Seems to me transport policy is being dictated by the Karen Korens of this world. We really need a radical overhaul of exactly how people are to move around the city.
