Indian restaurants

It's been a long time since I have been out and about in Edinburgh city centre. I have, or will soon have, family over from Canada, we are staying at the Apex international in the grassmarket. Where is the best Indian restaurant near to this, preferably walking distance. I would prefer somewhere that has a good ambiance and, obviously, good food. Price is not an object, though I don't want to pay over the odds. The last Indian I was in there was lancers down stockbridge, it was very nice, but as I said, I would rather somewhere nearer where we are staying.

That looks like a fantastic menu - especially as it has Fish Pakora at a mere £4.25

A classic Indian dish that isn't always easy to find.

My wife and I went there a couple of years ago and swore we'd never go back.

Beer was warm.

Food was tasteless, only blessing was the small portion size!

Staff didn't give a damn and when we complained bordered on the rude.

Unusual for the *everyone* to have an off day so its now off our list completely.

The Guru is back to its best, after a short time of being average, but probably just outside walking range for a group, 20 minutes? Just along from the Fountain Park leisure complex, opposite Victor Paris.

Some good shouts so far.

I've always enjoyed the service and the food in Kalpna and with it being meat-free you don't usually feel overstuffed.

I've been away from Edinburgh for years and while I'm back for social occasions fairly frequently, I've lost touch with a lot of places.

Suruchi was a fantastic Indian when I lived in town. Anyone comment on whether it's still decent?

Agree, was one of the best in town as far as I (and many mates) was concerned but (we've all) been bitterly let down in various visits in the not too distant past. :-/

Tried Kama Sutra recently on Lothian Road pleasantly surprised especially with 20% discount after I registered for their club card some time ago.

If you want to try something a bit different from the usual Indian restaurant I would thoroughly recommend Mithas in Leith the food is top quality and a little more expensive but well worth the journey down from the Grassmarket.

Same owners as Khushis (which is also superb) but a very different menu.

Yup!

There was a period when there were a lot of staff changes however at least one or two, of the important folk, are back and there's been a definite change for the better.

I'm willing to accept it being on my head :-)

:agree: my mate did their Kismot Killer challenge. He finished the lot and I can honestly say I've never seen vomit as luminous as the vomit he produced later that evening.

Those of us having sensible curries had a fantastic meal, with no ill effects at all!

Always thought it a pretty silly challenge to set never mind take on, can't imagine anyone completing it without suffering consequences afterwards.

I tried a 'suicide wings' challenge in Vegas.

The sauce had Habeneros, Scotch Bonnets, Naga Viper and Carolina Reaper (about 300 times hotter than a Jalapeno) chillis in it as well as a couple of drops of pure capsicum extract.

The initial taste wasn't too bas as my mouth totally numbed but it then got very, very unpleasant. I managed 4 of the 6 before I had to give up. The next 5 or 6 hours was some of the worst pain I have ever endured. I went through about 15 milkshakes, numerous bottles of iced water, cokes with ice and held ice cubes on my tongue and just couldn't cool it.

I love spicy food but that was one of the stupidest things I have ever done, my stomach was agony for days after.

Thanks for all your replies. We eventually went to mother India, it was really good, even our Canadian cousins, who are not big on Indian food, loved it as well.

Agreed, my mate bought his first flat above such an establishment in Dundee St. The extractor fan for the takeaway made his floor vibrate and the smell permeated through the flat every evening,,,, the novelty of living so close to an Indian soon wore off!

Agree re the Kismot. Have been loads and always had a great meal. Staff are excellent as well. Have experienced the killer, the next couple of days were unpleasant!!
