Apparent suicide, I know he had his troubles with drugs and depression, what a real shame, used to love Mork:not worth

Dreadful news. His performance in Good Will Hunting is one of my favourite.
Depression is such a deadly thing and the stigma related to it needs to be tackled.
RIP Robin
Nanu Nanu , will be sadly missed, loved him in Good Will Hunting among many others

RIP Robin. Grew up watching his movies and loving his sense of humour.
Remember laughing for about 30 minutes after this from Graham Norton

Sad, it's quite a common phenomenon that some of those who bring so much happiness to others are themselves deeply unhappy at core. RIP Rabbie

Genuinely wobbled a bit this morning reading this news. I loved so many of his characters and found both his acting skill and comedic prowess remarkable.
Hook was one of the first films I watched religiously as a child and he was absolutely fantastic as Peter Pan. His list of credits are amazing, of course, but I'll best remember him for Good Will Hunting, one of my favourite films of all-time, and his imperious performance in that.
I knew he had battled demons for a long time and he had been receiving treatment as recently as July. It's sad to know that the help didn't help and lead to this.
A genuinely tragic loss of one of the greatest actors and funny men of my time.

I always think it's one of those weird quirks of human nature that some of the most talented people seem to suffer from mental illnesses that both inspire them and then eventually overpower them.
When it comes to comedy I think part of the appeal of what makes people funny is being able to almost see their demons lurking in the background; Williams, Pryor, Milligan, Stanhope..... It shows a vulnerabilty, a cynicism and a realness that is relateable. The fact Williams also channeled that into several outstanding 'straight' acting performances is testament to his talent.

Great actor who was naturally funny. There was talk of a 2nd Mrs Doubtfire.

For me, the likes of Hook and Good Will Hunting were fairly average films. But there were two performances in particular in his career that just blew me away; opposite Pacino as the killer in the US remake of the Swedish classic Insomnia, and in Terry Gilliam's The Fisher King.

I'd agree with Hook (it's more the personal memory of it being one of the first films I watched a lot as a kid) but Good Will Hunting is far from 'average' IMO. It's lauded and rightly so.
Insomnia was a beautifully dark performance from him and really highlighted his versatility as an actor - as was One Hour Photo - not a great film but a superbly creepy performance from Williams.
He made me laugh, he entertained me and he made me cry - I've genuinely been very sad everytime I've glanced at the news today.

I know it did well, but I thought it was a bit clichéd and Minnie Driver was beyond awful, just my opinion. Completely agree with the rest of your post, and like you the news today hit me harder than i would have expected.

Some very eloquent, imo, words by Russel Brand on Williams:

Some great films and some turkeys in his career. Like all actors. But he took a lot of drugs and drank too much for his own good.

Saddened to read that his daughter is leaving Twitter because of abuse. Social media really does bring out the worst in people.

You didn't like 'Mrs Doubtfire'?
It was brilliant - and I struggle to think of anyone else who could have carried the role at the time.
I don't think it is a film that needed a sequel.

... really sad to hear he's gone and stunned to hear that he apparently hanged himself ...
Good Will Hunting is one of my favourite films - you're maybe right about the Driver role, but I thought Williams was outstanding in his role, his scenes with Damon were superb - didn't care much for the Insomnia movie myself - another favourite was the Dead Poet's Society - referenced here on German national news the other night ...

Very sad news indeed. A truly funny man who brought a lot of happiness and laugher to the world, just very sad he couldn't find it in himself. RIP
