Very surprised by this one tbh. A 6 month spell in Oz with David Villa would have been a better call. Might ruin his legacy at chelsea somewhat

At his age and with his money I think I'd have stayed in New York. He has got kids though so it does mean he'll still have regular contact with them.
On a side not, I've always had a thing for his ex mrs for some reason.

You are maybe missing that team does not exist / play yet - until next year ?

I read it as he would have stayed in New York and had a 6 month break.

There are a few new franchises appearing in the USA league this coming season. Quite exciting to see the MLS expanding and growing in popularity now :agree:

A new team also being set up in Orlando - look forward to going to see them whilst on holiday as their new stadium will be stunning when it's completed.

One thing that confuses me about most sports in the USA is why is the gap between the end of one season and the start of the next so long?

6 months in the NFL.
4 months in the MLS.
3 months plus in the NBA.
5/6 months in the MLB.

Usually because it allows the other sports to take centre stage for a while and save fans having to chose - it's great for the economy of the towns as there are sports fans year round.

Plus, with baseball, the guys deserve a rest as the season is long. Having said that, some of them go off and play winter ball in central/south America.

I couldn't understand why Chelsea let him go. He's still a great player and he should be captain of England.

I don't think City own any other club. The owners of Manchester City (The Manchester City Group) do fully own New York City and Melbourne City and have a minority stake in Yokohama. The latter is part of a sponsrship deal with Nissan.

The loan deal makes sense for both parties. City are short of home grown players and will need cover in January with Ya Ya Toure being away for the African Cup of Nations. Lampard needs to maintain his fitness before the season starts in March.

:hmmm: an elaborate way round the rules?
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has questionedManchester City's signing of Frank Lampard. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28627707)
Midfielder Lampard, 36, will join City on a six-month loan deal from Major League Soccer franchise New York City - one of three clubs affiliated to the Premier League champions.
Last season, City received sanctions on their squad after breaching Uefa's Financial Fair Play regulations. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27445475)
"Is it a way to get around the fair play? I don't know," said Wenger.
"It looks like all of these 'City' clubs will feed the main club Manchester City - I heard they want to buy five clubs all over the world.
"I don't know the rules well enough, but they bought a franchise for £59.4m to play in the States next season."

City have been restricted to a 21-man Champions League squad this year - with eight home-grown players required in their Premier League squad.

:agree: Could be great foresight though, getting next seasons excuses out there early?

Pretty much the same happens here in NZ / Australia. 5 month pre season in the A-League, it's a nightmare to be honest! :agree:

But, as stated, it's to minimise clashes with AFL, NRL, Super Rugby etc etc.
