Inspired by the Nando's thread, I was wondering where everyone enjoys a nice meal out in Edinburgh. I'll kick us off with a couple:
Shebeen: South African restaurant on Morrison street Does an absolutely fantastic steak. Absolutely huge. Would thoroughly recommend for anyone who enjoys a good steak, and a good sized portion.
Chaophraya: Thai restaurant just off George Street. I've only actually been there once but I (and everyone else really enjoyed our meal). Tempura prawns, Sirloin steak and then deep fried ice cream. One of those restaurants where it took ages to decide what to have because there was simply so much on offer that all looked really good.

La Garigue on Jeffery st is excellent for some wholesome French cuisine.
Westwood on Royal Mile is nice for a romantic meal. Outstanding quality, never been given michelan star but the standard isn't far off in my opinion.
One of my favourite restaurants used to be Tijuana Yacht Club until the owner died suddenly and they sold and it become 'The Dogs'. Edinburgh has a dearth of good Mexican eateries and the hole left by TYC has never been filled.

The Pompadour at the Caley hotel although it hasn't got one YET. Craig Sandle and his team are on top of their game, the Brasserie on Rutland Street attached to the hotel which he also oversees is superb also and very reasonably priced.

Mother India is excellent. :agree:
Tried St Johns Curry Club for takeaway a couple of times though and been disappointed both times. Would much rather have a Delta.
Al Dente the Italian restaurant without pizzas on Easter Road.
The owner goes a long way to acquire real Italian ingredients to go into his authentic Italian dishes. Bit of an enthusiastic blether too! Loves talking about the food, the menus, the wine, the regions they all come from.

Is that the one at Roseburn? Funny enough overheard a conversation on the bus last week where one older guy was convincing his mate it was one of the best in Edinburgh, he said it's different to a normal indian?

On the contrary I found the Brasserie to be very poor. Food as not bad but everything else just didn't sit properly.

I have been several times and on each occasion found the food, service and atmosphere to be perfect especially for the price. Jazz on a Sunday afternoon is enjoyable too if that's your thing.

Would agree with that. Tried the brasserie not lomg after it opened and thought the food was ok but the service was a bit stiff and there was zero atmosphere.
When it comes to restaurants I always think it really depends what you are looking for. For simple(ish) food done well I like The Dogs on Hanover Street and Tom Kitchins new pub in Stockbridge The Scran and Scallie. I also like The Honours on Castle Street and Hadrians at Thr Balmoral.
For something a bit different I like 21212 and The Gardners Cottage. If I'm going to spend a bit then the tasting menus at both Martin Wishart and Mark Greenaway are excellent.

Aye that's the one. I wouldn't say it's different to a normal Indian, but it's the best Indian takeaway you can get anywhere near me.

New restaurant opened called 'Fish', sister restaurant of 'Steak' in Picardy Place (both in same premises)
Lovely stuff, more of a steak man myself but can't fault Fish at all.

The Kitchin for Michelin Star stuff ( for personal reasons ), also like 2-1-2-1-2.
Scotch Malt Whisky Society
Going to Scran and Scallie on the 18th before the tattoo. What's the easiest way to get to it anyway? Assuming taxi from Waverley?

Scran and Scallie on Monday. Very nice. Pub grub, but good pub grub. A pint of Schiehallion for the first time that was rather tasty as well.
Oh and the tattoo was excellent as well. These poor Zulu burdz must have froze their t**s off!!!!
Anyone tried the sushi secret garden as well? keep hearing about these places but can't go.

I thought it was very overrated to be honest.
Prefer the Cambridge Bar for a burger (although that was slightly over done the last time I was there too).

I agree with deano88, the burgers were good but not great. Their wings with the magma sauce are worth a shot if you're brave.
The Holyrood 9A does decent gourmet burgers, not had a bad one yet and the beers are fairly decent too.

sat in once and used it get take away noodles a few times. the noodles are good and had a tidy pork and rice dish when I sat in. I fouind the dim sum dishes a bit hit and miss, that might be down to it having been a first time experience for me though.

If anyone's thinking of booking Howies in Victoria Street I'd advise them to steer clear. Was there on Saturday and to be honest I could have conjured up more flavour with a packet of savoury rice and a couple of turkeyburgers. We can't remember having a meal in a restaurant that was so lacking in flavour and none of the 4 of us even had the same dish.

:aok: Cheers, I parked right in front of it today and it struck me that I had passed it loads of times without actually noticing it. Might give it a bash soon.

Thai Orchid, near the castle, was very nice when I was there last month.
You'll need to book but it's more than worth it.

Wife says their burgers, unlike some of the others on here :greengrin was excellent. I had the braised lamb shoulder which again was pure braw. We had a couple of extra dishes thrown in for free and the pickled beef was awfy braw!
Still prefer The Kitchin though :-)
