Watched him on the day he got the train up to Edinburgh to play as a trialist. Outstanding, said to my friend we have to sign that boy.

Yeah, spoiled watching him as a teenager. Had pleasure to train a couple of times with hibs and his ability is frightening.

He could play anywhere on the park with a touch like that. Always had time

That goal against Celtic at Easter road when he played a one two from half way line and smashed it in. Also the header at ibrox

Immense.

If he was that good without pace, can you imagine how good he'd have been if he was quick?

Loved him.

Who told you to say that? You're half my age and I never saw Shades!

Excellent player. Great first touch, could pass a ball accurately short or long, strong in the tackle, good in the air for his hight and a great striker of the ball from open play or a dead ball.

His goal v St Johnstone in the LC semi at Tiny will stay in my memory. Can't find any footage online. Only thing he lacked was a bit of pace. Best LB I've seen at ER.

Tremendous player. If we had 11 players with that attitude and class we'd be some side.

I saw Shades, great great player, different from Murphy but, in hibs team that he was part of, fabulous.

Certainly the best full back we've had in my 20 or so years of watching Hibs,it's shame he had to retire.

In my top 3 Hibs players I who's talent I could really appreciate (I saw Latapy and Sauzee but was young) alongside Riordan and Boozy.

At a push, he'd edge it before them. Class, sublime, so consistent, he just eased himself through games.

He'd have England caps if he had a bit more pace as he certainly had the technique for it.

TheFamous1875
17-07-2014, 06:37 PM
Can you teach pace? Just, if we did that, we could've added an extra zero on to his transfer fee  :notworth:

Time does funny things to your perception of a past players abilities and performances, but in Davids case, my memories are of holding my breath when he had the ball, expecting something sublime to result from his possession....and my old bones cherish those memories.

One of the best to pull on a Hibs jersey. I'm disappointed we didn't arrange a pre-season with Birmingham as a testimonial

Different players, Murphy was the best of the last couple of Decades but Shades was the best in the position I have seen he brought an extra dimension when the going got tough. Loved the club, never voluntarily left and couldn't wait to get back.

Didn't realise he was only 20 when he signed! What a player

Sir David Gray
17-07-2014, 09:40 PM
One of the best players I've seen at the club in almost 20 years of going to games.

Rarely had a bad game and we still haven't replaced him at left back, more than six years after he moved on.

He was also part of a Hibs cup winning team, which is a rarity for us.

If only we could turn the clock back 10 years and sign him all over again!

Unseen work
17-07-2014, 09:43 PM
He looked like he always had ages on the ball, no matter how tight the situation.

His awareness and vision of what was going on around him followed by the great first touch. How good his first touch is I sometimes think people forget he was a brilliant defender, very few players got the better of him

I have a great video I shot of him when he scored his header, the crowd went mental. The YouTube admins must have been Rangers fans as they always blocked the video when I tried to upload it.

A very good player but i wouldn't go much further than saying a solid, consistent pro of English championship standard. Don't get me wrong though, would like a couple like him in the team just now.

His ability to ping down the left wing, play a 1-2 off of brown and keep going skin players on the way to the line and whip in an inch perfect cross into the box.
what an injection of pace he brought to the team. :flag:

Classy player, useful at both ends of the pitch. 1st pick on the team sheet, I'm sure... must be great for a manager to know a position is just 'sorted'.

Lee Clark's comments on Murphy's retirement show that we were not alone in admiring the ability he had. If he had more pace he would have been absolutely top class but on the other hand we would not have had those brilliant few years he gave us.

Just as i see it so.

Erich and him where two different types of players, just imagine if you combined both of their talents, how good a player would that be!!!

Erich was part and parcel of the club he loved so much and was so hurt and upset to be transferred to Dundee.

Murphy just oozed class and that goal at the Pink Bus Shelter against St Johnstone was as good as any ive seen!

Shame he has had to retire. Good luck to him in whatever he chooses to do in the future.

The first touch was worth the admission alone. Confident passer, and always thinking about linking the play. Astonishing talent for us, and just a shame he's had to end his playing career already. :top marks:flag::thumbsup:

Fantastic player, great engine, workhorse, never shyed away & always willing to get stuck in. Best left back I've seen at Hibs, cannot find a bad word to say about him, Would have played at a much higher level had he had a bit more pace. Cup winner :aok:

Great touch, solid defender, exciting going forward with a fantastic final ball or shot. I was unsure when he signed, delighted when I watched him and gutted when he left, although he did deserve a move for a better pay day and platform. I met him once down ocean terminal and he was a humble, decent lad and I could tell he caught the hibs bug early on. In my book, he is a legend!!!

Funnily enough, I had the exact same thought today.

Like many others have said, Murphy is one of my all time favourite players.

His goal at Tynie in the CIS semi against St Js was a peach and summed the guy up, classy.
