View Full Version : Rolf Harris get 5 year sentence

21.05.2016

So thats Rolf Harris banged up for 5 years (with the chance of potential early release) for his sex crimes.

Disgusting old perv should be ashamed (although his lack of apology or remorse suggests he has very little). Another celebrity that thought he was above the law just because he was famous and used his fame to manipulative young, vulnerable kids.

Since the Saville scandel was revealed it seems to have been one celebrity after the other. Absolutely vile. But at least if there has been one positive thing from the Saville case is that more people have had the courage to step forward and feel that they will now be believed rather than just brushed aside because their claims were against a celebrity.

Already up for review due to the leniency of the sentence.

Just listening to AC/DC whilst swinging the hoover around a bit. There's a line in "Love at first feel" sung by Bon Scott that sort of backs up some of the excuses these celebs have been spouting. "I never knew if you were legal tender but I spent you anyway". Was that really the attitude back then?

An old pal from years ago was talking about the old jannie that looked after the football pitches near the scheme he grew up was well known for grabbing the boys here and there, flashing etc. it was kind of common knowledge. This was the late 70s early 80s. The ‘dirty old man’ character was still considered a bit ‘funny’ at the time. Folk would make fun of him but somehow never reported him or thought it was a police matter. Very strange looking back at this attitude today.

Yep it was really strange. When I played Sunday League back in the late 70s there was an assistant manager in the league who was well known to "like the young laddies". He was shunned by the other teams' coaches and players but that was about it.

I always remember my granny telling me about a serial flasher who done the rounds when she was in her teens so that would have been the 40s. All the girls just laughed at him and he was well known for it among the local parents and referred to as the 'funny fellae' but nobody really considered it a Police matter or even particularly sinister. Obviously with the likes of Saville we have seen the local 'character' or eccentric sort can disguise nefarious behaviour by hiding in plain sight but it still seems bizarre to me. Someone willfully exposing themselves to teen girls now would quite rightly end up on the sex offenders register and quite probably in jail, I'd struggle to imagine anyone thinking of it as being just a bit amusing.

Talking about changed perceptions and attitudes, I remember back in the late 50s, early 60s, there was a guy, nicknamed Paul the P***, who regularly frequented and flashed in Pilrig park. He was treated as a joke and generally ignored but how he got away with it, the mind boggles.

Ps. This might be the guy you talk about, PB.

Don't think it would be. My granny was Fountainbridge then Broomhouse growing up but sounds a similar type. It's just odd looking back at such things with hindsight.

I won't name the person here as unsure of the legal consequence, but my Twitter feed lit up on Sunday morning about an unnamed British celebrity who was allegedly well known as someone that was involved in outright illegal activity in regards to women & children, not just some geezer up to no good. Many of the tweets mentioned that there has either been a news blackout because this guy is so treasured or that the police have investigated and agreed not to release names/details until his passing.
I don't know how true any of this is, but many of the replies all named the same person. When the Jimmy Saville news broke it didn't come as a complete surprise to many but this did to me and if I'm honest I felt a little bit sick.

In the late 80's I was in the boys brigade for a short while. Great fun for a young lad, drill nights on a Monday acting like pretendy soldiers, weekend football, Wednesday badminton with drum & pipe lessons for those that wanted.
The only downside was the "Captain". There was lots of chat about him being a wrong 'un but I never came across it until we went on our annual camp to Craggan. As part of the "rules" we weren't allowed out in the canoes until we had capsized it deliberately and demonstrated our ability to get out and back to shore. Being October, Loch Tay was freezing so we had to run in after our dook to warm up under hot showers, and there was the Captain, hanging about the shower area whilst all these young boys from 8 to 15 had to strip off.
Whether it was the rumours or actual experience, two women used to come along and act as chaperones for the younger boys but it obviously didn't work because I found out the guy was arrested and sentenced for child abuse in the late 90's.

I'm sure Cliff Richard was investigated at the time of the Yewtree enquiries. Iirc there was a lot of criticism of the Police for tipping of the media to the fact his house was to be raided and he won significant damages from the BBC for their coverage of it. No charges were brought and I think there was a bit of pointed criticism of one of his accusers by the authorities which is unusual.

I think he might just be a guy who is genuinely odd but harmless as opposed to using 'odd' as a disguise.

I've always thought that Cliff is the cliche Asexual, which is enough in the eyes of many to label him as a weirdo. Most of the predators out there are everyday likeable people, they have to be, otherwise we wouldn't let them near our kids.

Not sure if it is the same name you've read but I was quite surprised when I read the name I saw. Then you do a bit of reading and it seems he's had a few mates that have been done for such offences and he seems to openly defend them. Could just be a case of people accusing him because of the company he keeps.

Would these people really be so "untouchable" like MWT suggests in a post Savile world? Especially the name I saw, although he's seen as a bit of a "national treasure", I wouldn't have thought he'd have high-powered connections that would "protect him" like Savile did.

Very true, a guy at work got done for having 1000s of child pornographic images and videos on his home computer. I thought he was quite a likeable, mild-mannered guy until it came out that's what he had been up to.

Add in taking photos of the kids in nothing but a pair of shorts and you've just described Thomas Hamilton, the ********* that murdered all those kids in Dunblane.

That's the same name I've read, it's cropped up now and again over the last few years.

With Savile and the sheer number of incidents reported wasn't there some system put in place to collate reports of this nature from different police forces? If that's the case then surely if there is a pattern emerging against anyone it should be investigated and not swept aside. But maybe it has been looked at and found to be a load of pish?

More than likely, two mates who sexually assaulted two boys in his house whilst he was away working. Both men arrested and sentenced but the story was blocked from being reported.
Even if the "star" had nothing to do with it the sensationalism of the tale would surely have made the headlines...."Star of *** house used as sodomy dungeon".

Oddly enough, that was what I though too. He's the only person I thought could potentially be described as "untouchable". Does the person being alluded to here have more power/friends in high places to stop anything coming out than, say, Rolf Harris did? A so-called National Treasure, of course, but how much sway does that have post-Yewtree?
