There is no reason that being a football player / manager should be any different from any other employment .. Rolling contracts should be the standard way to football employment, then if you are not up to the job or want to move on it is easier for both parties to terminate contracts. All this compensation because you cannot do your job is wrong, the same with having to keep players who fail at their job.. It would not happen in any other form of employment. The whole payoff and compensation lark needs looked at and changed to be fairer on both parties.

So Celtic want Sam Stanton, speak to his agent and moves to them for free in July and Hibs get nowt.

Yeah I can see this catching on......

The major thing which needs changed, especially in elite football as it filters down to our level, is that agents need to be told to do one. Takes money out the game at incredible levels. Example is Gareth Bale's trainsfer to Madrid. Real contacted Spurs in the June, yet the transfer went through on deadline day in Spetember. All this so that sky sports could sell advertising on the last day at premium rates and for that and for the negotiations, his 2 agents got more money than they got for every transfer dealing they ever completed COMBINED

It would never work for players. As soon as any team starts showing signs of promise, their players would be whipped away.

But that is life in the real world ... Why should football be any different, I suppose young promising players could be on 2 year rolling contracts and a clause if they are under 21 that a fee must be agreed if another team wants them. It could be done sensibly if it was thought out and would protect both football clubs and players.

Your idea would mean the wealthy clubs become ever richer and move further away from the rest of us. There is a special exemption in European employment law for football contracts - it's just about the only way that smaller clubs can hope to compete.

Look at Atletico in Spain - fell just short in the Champions League final but won La Liga, a wonderful breath of fresh air for Spanish football. It's now likely that their team will be broken up, but at least they will get some compensation.
