View Full Version : Who is the most annoying commentator/analyst?

I treat commentators the same way I treat chants or songs from opposition fans, I never really listen to them and can't for the life of me understand how or why people get so wound up by them.

May as well ask what kind of piles are the worst. Big ones, small ones, medium ones. They all irritate and are a pain in the backside.

Lucky we don't have to listen to these guys on ESPN coverage. I've seen Van Nistleroy, Michael Ballack and a few ex USA players. Nobody has annoyed me so far. The best pundit for me has been Roberto Martinez who gives great tactical insight. Steve McManaman is also very good co-commentating as a former player but one who is a real football fan quick to criticize referee decisions.

Townsend as a commentator and Ian Wright as a pundit - both bloody awful.

Of course, Michael Owen is worse still but no BT Sport coverage to worry about - as someone once said, he is like listening to paint dry.

Almost impossible to decide between Lawrenson or Townsend - both ruin games with the s*it they spout !. Lawrenson sees England teams/players that only actually exist in his (Tiny) mind and Townsend just for not giving a toss about his blatant bias !.

Why oh why doesn't some forward-thinking TV company trial a game with NO COMMENTARY - just televise it, complete with the crowd-noise and nothing else ??. I'd certainly buy it !!

Ian Wright though. What an absolute welt he is. Last night was he not talking about how Spain are finished now? Granted they got turned over in the second half, but I thought they looked really good in the first half. They're hardly Irish - I heard that during the anthems first game he played Townsend turned to the guy next to him in the pre-match line-up (who happened to be a genuine Irishman - and said, "Blimey, this lot's anthem don't half go on and on, don't it?"

The Irishman had to explain to him they were listening to "The Soldiers' Song".

Lawrenson and Townsend - two mercenaries recruited by that famous son of the Emerald Isle, Jack "Begorrah" Charlton.

I actually like Chiles and Tyldesley. They add comments from time to time about things like social and political context to games/players which I like. Jonathan Pearce is excellent in that way, but I don't suppose that's what this thread is about.

What I would like from all the pundits, though, is more information about the football set-up in the countries themselves. I know it's obviously true of a lot of the countries, but you'd think that every team only had players plying their trade in Europe.

I can't believe Phil Neville isn't up there, his stop/start/3 second pause style of commentating is horrendous. It's like he's reading Ceefax subtitles.

Lawrenson is shocking though. His lack of professionalism is unbelievable. He knows very little about the basic rules or backgrounds of the teams playing. I mean basic stuff that any commentator should have read up on before heading out to Brazil. Yesterday he had to ask the other commentator how many yellows before a player is suspended.

Do you mean the discussion about how the goal-line thingy worked?

He made a mystery out of nothing - the device worked perfectly. The ball didn't cross the line off the post - no goal - but did cross the line after the goalkeeper fumbled it.

Of course. it's made by a German company, and no red-blooded Engerlishmun can ever admit that the Jerries get anything right. Tw World Wars and one World Cup, dontcherknow?o

Tyldsley cannot commentate on any game without mentioning Man United and has no hesitation in indulging in casual racism. Townsend adds nothing as a so called expert, however even they cannot match the inane witterings of Lawrenson.

I picked Andy "point out the bleeding obvious" Townsend but TBH the rest are awful too.
'Lawro'? What a blethering skate he is.

Jonathan 'Confused' Pearce alongside Mark 'Irrelevant' Lawrenson.

Should be good!

Townsend and Tyldsley are worst. I used to hate Ian Wright but not seen heard any of him this year. I heard him on 5live the night England qualified and he was very downbeat on their chances.

These two take the joy out of everything. Pearce just mentioned the murder rate in the nearby favela, and Lawro is moaning about the diving.

Good game so far, mostly Brazil attacking, not that you'd notice listening to these two.

His best days at Liverpool were as a centre back partner to Alan Hansen, Lawrenson was superb for Liverpool in that position and I doubt you could have done the same. :greengrin

Never used at full back then? I doubt that too. An unremarkable player. Or he'd have played for his country. And a tit. Clearly.

Yes he was used at full back, he was capped 39 times for his country and was superb for Liverpool at CB alongside Hansen, saw it with my own eyes! Career ended early by injury, and anything but unremarkable.

Pearce: "Neymar has 33 goals in 50 international games - and he's only 22."
Lawrenson: "Fifty goals?! Amazing!"

And, no, Jonathan, the technology did not get it horribly wrong the other night. YOU DID. Stick to robot wars you thick canute.

Unremarkable. A utility player. And if I am allowed, used in midfield as well? Capped 39 times not for his country, but for a country his old man farted in once and he remains, obviously, a tit.

:agree: I thought so. I can't stand Lawrenson - sounds like he's about to cut his throat and after 5 minutes listening to him I'd happily hand him the razor - so I pressed the red button and got Brad F and an Irish guy on Five Live whose name I didn't catch.

They were pretty good - I liked a comment from the Irish guy - "Any clown could have seen Fred was offside - except of course the nearside assistant", followed a couple of minutes later by "Ah, flag's up - he's got it right this time now the referee's explained the rules to him."

They were also obviously trying to make the best of the game, which wasn't actaully a bad one, IMO. Lineker, Shearer, Lawrenson and Co seem determined to rubbish anything that doesn't have three leopards on its front.

Henry in particular has been outstanding. Appears very intelligent and has an in depth knowledge of the game. BBC done well hiring him. I suspect they'll be trying to get first refusal for him in a pundit role once he retires
