On the theme of some of the other conspiracy threads on the board thought I'd start one about Mars after watching a programme about it.

Anyone with an interest in this/space? Or seen some of the conspiracies theories and strange photos?

Face Of Mars - I'm sure we're all familiar with this. What's everyone's thoughts? NASA have looked to dispel this as mere chance, and the fact that humans have a disposition for recognizing faces in shapes. They have also put up photos from over the years that appears to show it was just chance and that in time the sand and light have moved. Although, conspiracy theorists claim a mars rover that blew up was actually a controlled explosion to hide evidence of life on mars....

Pyramids & Sphinx of Mars - Personally I don't see these in the photos myself, but I do find it interesting that there are still questions we have today about the Pyramids and how they were built etc.

Light of Mars - http://petapixel.com/2014/04/10/curiosity-rover-photographs-bright-light-mars-gets-conspiracy-theorists-going/ Seen a few explanations for this but can't say anything that I've found conclusive. Still think we've yet to undnerstand what the apparent beam of light actually is.

Any other photos/conspiracies/weird anomalies on Mars that have caught your eye?

There are plenty of these type of things out there but we can also see recognisable objects in inanimate things here on Earth too...

NASA/ESA's current timeline for sending people to Mars is quite exciting. We had Ellen Stofan (NASA's chief scientist) give a presentation at Surrey a couple of weeks ago on the future of the program/scientific background and it was quite fascinating.

Hi res image of the Cydonia region shows that it's not even remotely shaped like a face, just purely the luck of where the shadows fall that makes it look the way it does. The others are also easily explained away, unfortunately it's always faint fuzzy images that capture the imagination, funny how you never see any mention of the high resolution stuff with some of these images!

The rest are simply optical coincidence? We as a human race need to get to Mars. Scotland, if we gain Independence, should start to fund a solely Scottish mission to Mars. We need to be the first there, we need to colonise Mars. Think of the fun that could be had writing 'f*** off England' on Olympus Mons.
