Hibs icon Mickey Weir: Looking at the mess my club is in really breaks my heart

MICKEY WEIR knows all about the high standards expected at Hibs. Legends Pat Stanton and Jimmy O’Rourke saw to that the minute he set foot in Easter Road as a young player.

Weir was left in no doubt only the best will do. And the warning served him well every time he pulled on the Hibs jersey in over a decade’s service, helping him secure a place in Leith folklore when he played his part in League Cup glory in 1991.

But Weir has watched in horror as those same standards have eroded to the point of ruin under the stewardship of Rod Petrie and admits it breaks his heart.

The club have lurched into a laughing stock and Weir – plus tens of thousands of fellow fans – are adamant the self-inflicted wounds can only begin to heal once Petrie is dumped.

Weir turned up at Easter Road on Saturday alongside 1500 Hibees supporters to join former team-mate Paul Kane and 1972 League Cup winners Stanton and O’Rourke for the biggest and most vocal “Petrie Out” protest yet.

They were bolstered by ex-keeper Mike McDonald, who travelled up from England, and Kenny McLean jnr whose father Kenny – a former chairman of the club – fronted the Hands Off Hibs campaign in 1990.

The rebels have strength and solidity in numbers and their message is loud and clear.

Weir said: “First and foremost I thank the Hibs supporters for turning up. We are here for one cause an that is because we all care about Hibs.

“When I was a young boy I walked into Easter Road and was very fortunate to work alongside great Hibs players and great men like Pat Stanton and Jimmy O’Rourke.

“They brought me and the other players up with the attitude: ‘You’re playing for Hibs now son, you need to learn that quickly.’ They taught me that when you played for Hibs there were certain high standards that have to be met.

“It might have made me the grumpiest bad loser you have ever met but it stood me in great stead.

“Now I look at the mess this club is in and it breaks my heart.”

The club’s plight resulted in a plummet to relegation last season as Petrie’s trigger-happy reign of seven managers in 10 years left the chairman firmly in the firing line.

However, Weir reckons the protest group have the perfect leader in Kane and backed him to deliver Petrie’s head on a platter.

The rebels will step up their campaign today by going directly to Hibs owner Sir Tom Farmer to demand the instant removal of Petrie.

And while Weir is standing shoulder to shoulder with Kane he admits there were times he wanted to wring his neck during their playing days because the midfielder fleeced him for a fortune and lumbered him with the hardest chores.

Weir said: “I’ve known Paul since he was 14 and to be honest he took a lot of money off me.

“He always got me the bad duties like cleaning out the main stand. It was a privilege and something I always looked forward to at the time!

“Kano will do what’s right for Hibs because he cares so much and loves this club. He won’t rest until the ‘Petrie Out’ campaign has come to a successful conclusion.”

Weir insists he felt most let down by Petrie in the 2012 Scottish Cup Final when a bunch of players he regards as not worthy of wearing the jersey were hammered 5-1 by Edinburgh rivals Hearts.

He is disillusioned with Petrie for failing to deliver the best quality and reckons the rag-tag collection of loanees and free transfers who humiliated the club at Hampden that day are a damning indictment of the mis-spending during the chairman’s time at the helm.

Weir doesn’t expect miracles from an Easter Road team but he does demand they challenge at the right end of the top flight instead of languishing in the second tier.

Weir took to the stage on Saturday and addressed the crowd with an impassioned plea to keep doing all they can to get rid of Petrie.

As rousing renditions of Hibs anthems Sunshine On Leith, Glory, Glory to the Hibees and 1970s favourite Turnbull’s Tornadoes’ blared out over the tannoy Weir’s words struck a chord with the disgruntled support.

The 48-year-old said: “To go into a Scottish Cup Final with six or seven trialists, free transfers, loan deals, that’s just not good enough for Hibs. I was brought up in the Hibs tradition, that’s the way I’ll always be, and this club deserves the best.

“When I walked in here I was taught that very quickly. Hibs are not expected to win the Premier League title every year but we are expected to be up there challenging for Europe. That’s what this club deserves.

“Hopefully we can move things on now. It becomes emotional when you see so many people turning up with so much love for the club and singing the songs.

“This is not just about getting certain people out of the club, it is also about getting things right.

“It is about this proud club being run the right way.

“That’s why we need the Hibs fans to stay strong and hopefully we can get this club back to where it should be.”
