Wow. Players in bold were absolute humpy. Yogi and Collins signed some real dross but Calderwood bought predominantly garbage, PF's first January window was a horror show and Butcher hasn't fared any better on the signing front.

Shameful waste of resources. Do we have a scouting network?

Also I'll get in first and say why is there only one of the sowumni brothers on it?

Whilst i agree with most of the players you highlighted, i still think Akpo Sodje was a decent player and was really starting to find his feet when we ended his contract.

Haji was some wee Iranian player IIRC, signed and never heard of again.

I agree with many of your assessments, but Ricardo Vaz Te was obviously an excellent player surrounded by muppets. He went on to feature regularly for West Ham in the EPL.

And post Mowbray era, how many went on to bigger and better things?

Very, very few which in itself is a testament to the abject failure of both our scouting system and successive Managers who failed to bring in players who added value to the Club. The Board can't be blamed for everything as other "lesser" but more successful Clubs have managed with far fewer resources than us.

It's a *loody disgrace in fact.

Sums up with what is wrong. No consistency. No one given time to bed down and settle in and no loyalty or mutual respect with the support can be built up.

This ties in with another post re Vines comments and I think the route of Petries failure. You can not run and football club as a constant merry-go-round wasting countless thundered of thousands on short term fixes then discard the proceeds. Pathetic and I hope our new CEO is well aware of this abject shambles.

Going forward build loyalty through youth- the likes of Stanton. Harris, Cummings hopefully and support with a few proven imports who understand the style and ethos.

IMO there's 28 successful signings out of the 115 in that list and 79 that offered absolutely nothing, while the other couple were just indifferent.... :bitchy:

Shameful waste of resources. Do we have a scouting network?

I doubt that scouts are used going by the amount of 3rd rate foreign players that have come and gone. I suspect that certain preferred agents are used. It would be interesting to check out if all the dross came from various agents or only a few.

Do clubs still give players trials or is that old school?

I didn't say so in my OP but this was the reason for this thread. Hibs used to be more successful when they produced their own players and only augmented them with a few external signings. But since RP took control it appears that the policy is bring in players on the cheap, on short therm deals. The Griffiths saga will emphasize that.

Reap what you sow, Mr Petrie.

And we would laugh at the number of managers/coaches that Mad Vlad brought in over at the PBS. Hibs are almost (but not quite) as bad.

The Bosman ruling changed the nature of the football transfer market for ever and Clubs were forced to re-evaluate both the way they organised their youth teams and their dealings in the transfer market.

It appears that we've still not got it right.

It's shocking to look at the decline of quality brought into Easter Road since 2004.

Mowbray:

In: Shiels, Murphy, Beuzelin, Jones, Benji, Zemmama, Stewart, Killen, Hogg, Sproule

Out: Riordan, O'Connor, Murray, Caldwell

Collins:

In: I can't think of any good signings he made.

Out: Brown, Thomson, Whittaker, Sproule, Stewart, Killen,

Mixu:

In: Nish, Rankin, Riordan, Bamba, Murray.

Out: Murphy, Beuzelin, Shiels.

Yogi:

In: Stokes, Miller, Stack.

Out: Benji, Fletcher, Jones, Stokes.

Calderwood:

In: Sparky, O'Connor, Vaz Te, Sproule.

Out: Zemmama, Bamba, Riordan, Vaz Te, Miller, Hogg.

Fenlon:

In: McPake, Claros, Robertson, Taiwo, Doyle, Maybury, Thomson, Williams.

Out: Sparky, O'Connor, Claros, Murray, Wotherspoon, Doyle, Sproule.

Butcher:

In: no one of note yet.

Out: Williams.

Again, this season will be another 'transitional' period. I can't see us getting promoted, but I can see us getting promoted the season after (if all goes well) at a canter.

This is a point I've made plenty times, who was scouting these players? Was it the managers or someone employed on our club to manage the scouting system. Petrie put funds in place to sign the players. Eg wages. He didn't scout them.

That list is absolutely shocking, and maybe goes quite a long way to explaining why HFC finds itself where it is today.

The large majority on that list are/were ganting, and I had actually erased some of them from my memory they were so bad. Is this the level of player we are reduced to signing? Who sanctioned these players coming into the club? Who thought they were good players? Step forward RP and successive managers at HFC.

The club needs to take a step back now, and stop bringing in lots of crap players and use what money it has on trying to bring in fewer but better quality players. Having been relegated that will be that bit harder. That's just one of the serious consequences for any club following relegation.

Sir David Gray
05-06-2014, 08:33 PM
Some more players to add to the list;

Andrew McNeil
Ian Murray

All started when we replaced Scott Brown with Brian Kerr.
And replaced Whittaker with Kevin Mccann.

That signaled the Hibernian Board intentions and that slide in calibre of player has never been addressed bar the odd gem like Stokes and Griffiths.

Ben Williams is the best goalkeeper we've had over the last 10 years IMO.

I would also have Zemmama in there ahead over Rocastle (he only played 14 games for us).

Apart from that, I would probably agree.

Sproule effectively as a RWB is a bit concerning. I'd imagine Stewart and Bamba would provide enough cover for him to get forward!
