View Full Version : Three players for playoff

Yes even from me in an effort to add hopefully some fun pick one defender, one midfielder and one striker who has played for us that if we could have them play for us again in their prime.

One rule to make it bit more difficult Sauzee isn't allowed :)

Defender: John Hughes. We need that spirit
Midfielder: Pat McGinley. Good for a goal.
Forward: Derek Riordan. Freekick or goal from nothing then he is the man.

Defender - Sol Bamba
Midfielder/Winger - Mickey Weir
Forward - Mixu

Strength, height and pace in defence
pace, skill and creativity in the midfield
Power, awareness and deadly in front of goal up front

In no way the three best players, but:

Whittaker as a decent full back would improve us no end.
Sproule (first time) because we'd have a bit of pace and buzz about the place.
Keith Wright. Goals would be nice.

Murphy: somebody who could put in a decent ball and offer an attacking threat down the left and also wouldn't fall asleep costing us a goal or the game.
Boozy: (post injury). I loved how after his knee injury he sat deep and collected the ball from the defence and was able to pick out passes and start moves. We could do with an easy ball into midfield right now!
Griffiths: he would score at least once of that I have no doubt. You could be sure he would play for the shirt aswell. He would run himself to death to keep us up.

Would get the job done.

Funnily, I was thinking of a similar thread to this (although I never post!) but seems unnecessary now. It was to pick a "mediocre" or under-rated team of players from the past that did not entirely inspire you at the time but you would kill for now. Shows how standards have dropped. I haven't included a goalkeeper as Williams is an exception so I went for:

Alan SNEDDON
Graham MITCHELL
Shaun DENNIS
Gary SMITH
Eddie MAY
John RANKIN
Stuart LOVELL
Tony ROUGIER
Eoin DOYLE
Gareth EVANS

All of whom I thought were decent but far from "legends" - but I'd take that team over the current lot any day!

If we're going for players not yet mentioned (I don't think anyway), then I'll go for

Chris Killlen
Kevin McAllister
Michael o'Neill

Although close choice with

Gordon Hunter and
Kevin Harper

To help Butchers current team :P Mixu, Boozy and Jones; A big target-man how could find the back of the net, Play-making mystro who can pass forward and a big solid CB who could lead.

If it was anytime then Super Leigh, Latapy and Murphy :P

How depressing is it? All these players that have been mentioned played for us, then compare to what we have now!

Shades: One of the best fullbacks I've ever seen, anywhere. Strong, very fit, fast, fearless in the tackle. Great long throw. Had the lot.
Alex Edwards: A brilliant passer of the ball. Great footballer. Could open up a defence with one telling through ball. No hoofball from Alex.
Joe Baker: An out and out prolific goalscorer. Great pace which could destroy defences. If Joe got a chance, he seldom missed.

If we had 3 players of that quality today, we would destroy the likes of Falkirk or Hamilton Accies.

If we had Joe BAKER, wouldn't we be winning the league or at least be second/third? He was well before my time but apparently he was a colossus. Far too advanced for the level of football in Scotland today. It'd be good if you could see the amount of chances created, scored and missed in his Hibs career and look at James Collins stats and see how much better off we'd be in the league this yearly Baker as our main man with these teammates.

I think if we had those players we'd be challenging at the top of the league. When players play with good players, they raise their game. Collins was incredible and so was Leigh and I'm not allowed Sauzee!

Did you mean to say Joe Baker mate? Mind you, Harper was a decent goal scorer too, but not nearly as good as Baker.

A hard working, quality left back who might, MIGHT offer more than McGivern :greengrin
A solid, no nonsense centre half to bring along young Forster.
Leigh = Goals. Enough said on that.

Restricting it to players that I've seen - Gordon Hunter, Pat McGinlay and Leigh Griffiths.

Guts me to leave out Latapy but I don't think he'd fit Butcher's playing style.

David Murphy - Best full back I have ever seen at Hibs.
Ivan Sproule - One of my favourite ever players and someone who would get you out of your seat.
Leigh Griffiths - Guaranteed goalscorer, I would have no doubts that we would win next week if we had him up front.

David Murphy - classy left back and a problem position for Hibs.
Steven Whittaker - ditto Murphy except right back.
Steven Fletcher - given the tactics used by Hibs need someone able to lead the line as well as score.
