Written off entirely last month and performed the miracle. Gus Poyet puts it down to the board, the players and fans all being together and believing. Surely we can manage to do this on Saturday.......

If only we could pull a prolific goalscorer out of the hat from nowhere as Poyet has had the foresight/luck to do. There's no way we'd be in this mess if we had someone of substance upfront this season. We'd still be rank right enough.

Sorry, I've hijacked your thread with negativity. It's addictive on this board! You're right, if the attitude is correct on Saturday then we can definitely win.

If Fabio Borini fancies a game on Saturday we'll win :greengrin But seriously, good on Sunderland - Won at Chelsea and Man Utd, picked up a point against City at the Ethiad and beat West Bromwich.

There lie's the problem.

The fact our manager was at an awards dinner down south last night instead of being at the Killie game tells you everything imo.

Good on Sunderland though. Di Canio left them in a mess but fair play to Gus. Must be the name

Delighted to see some excellent points being made on this thread. When I saw the title I came on expecting it to be another stick to bash Butcher with "well Poyet managed to do ok with somebody else's players" etc etc.

I'm mentioned elsewhere, we all need to raise our game. The players, the board, the manager and the fans. There hasn't been a feeling of unity between all of these factions probably since Collins' player revolt and we've been deeply suspicious of everything that's gone on since then.

The appointment of Dempster looks to me like an olive branch from the board. A bit like the Sunderland board punting Di Canio I suppose. Butcher needs to get his own players in and maage them properly. Whether we like it or not, some of these players will be here next year and playing - they will have to raise their game.

Up to us to see if we can do our bit. But never was a truer thing said than Poyet pointing out what a bit of unity can do when you're up against it.

:aok: exactly. In all fairness, we as fans have been excellent - over 400 went up to Dingwall on a Tuesday night which is great. It's time for the team to pay us back with a convincing performance on Saturday.

It tells me that on the eve of the biggest game of the season - or the last 8 or 9 , our manager should be doing everything in his power to analyse the opposition just as us qwerty keyboard managers have over the last 48 hours, sadly our opinions mean heehaw on team selection but his does.

So IMO it doesn't look like we are all pulling in the same direction.

You can tell all that from the fact that Butcher had an pre-booked event yesterday? Impressive.

More importantly Poyet has got them playing football, even when they were getting beaten there was no hoofball and it paid off in the end. Remember when Collins had us trying to play football from the back-seems like an eternity since we did that.

Fenlon had us trying to play football from the back.

The problem was that it rarely got past the "back" stage without people running out of ideas. :greengrin

We have four players considered to be strikers. Between them, they've scored a grand total of ten goals. We have the lowest goals scored of any team in the top flight.

We can be 'together' all we like, it's not going to put the ball in the net. Unless maybe we all blow really hard.........

:agree: Was a big mistake getting the rid of the slope. A full west and east blowing in unison towards the FF goal could have undone most visiting goalies. (With the whole of the FF sooking in, obviously.)

Not sure if you got involved personally but I recall a thread I started that essentially stated we should celebrate/stay very noisy even if we go a goal down against Hearts. Sadly I've noticed the same people have given Palace fans huge credit for doing that but at the time called me a Jambo and to **** off in the previous thread. We give other teams credit but criticise our own fans for suggesting we do the same...sigh really. I hope Allan Johnston comes out wearing a Jefferies mask on Sat. Boost the atmosphere.

Don't think the atmosphere on Sat will be anywhere near as negative as it's been on here for the last few days (for one thing, the undercover yam trolls that have been here won't be able to afford to go as all their spare dosh is going towards becoming owners of their club).

It will definitely get ugly if Thomson makes one or more of his trademark unbelievably bad decisions against us and as a result we end up in the play-off. Can easily see a police escort required for him in those circumstances.

Ref was with us when we gubbed Dumfy 4-0 (gave Hanlon a goal for managing to hit the bar from distance). Perhaps we're due a decision against us this time round? :dunno:

Yes, it is the one where I suggested we did something along those lines - I however only pointed to the fact other clubs have done similar "singing while losing" type thing, I did not say we should without doubt sing "lets pretend we scored a goal". Palace fans sang while 3 nil down, they ended up drawing 3-3. Tottenham fans have had over 400k+ views on a single video of "lets pretend we scored a goal". Don't get me wrong it was a bad example but it was the most recent one I could think of.

Oh well, guess it's alright for them. We'll all give them credit but, like I said, anybody who suggests similar around this place is clearly a Jambo, clearly demented ("you are indeed a mad hatter :agree:"), and deserves to be put down.

As has proved the case, our singing section is getting smaller and smaller, quieter and quieter and during the derby until Forster scored, lets be honest apart from Hearts' party, the place was like a graveyard...Shouts of ridicule but no chants of substantial decibel levels lasting for a prolonged period. Whilst I'd never blame the fans for this, I do blame them not for trying something different before now - I suggested something different for the derby and that went down like a lead balloon. Barring some encouragement against Partick, I only recall a very very quiet ER all season, with solemn faces about.

Part of the problem the club have, without it sounding ageist, the current batch of supporters, due to the failure on the pitch, are of an aging variety. This will need to change, we need a better balance to get a good family atmosphere plus having a cracking support for the team during normal play. We need more fans basically...or should I say we need more fans to turn up on a regular basis...

Whilst the comparisons to Palace and Tottenham are relevant in a way, also got to remember Spurs currently have their highest points total ever in PL history and Palace are on an incredible run of form this half of the season since Pulis came over, both clubs have a hell of a lot more to shout about than us. Id like to think if we were sitting up 3rd/4th in the table, even when losing wed still be singing loud and proud because I know we can. We've had to endure yet another season of disappointment after disappointment, watching 11 players running about in a jersey we would all kill to have the chance to wear on that pitch and the vast majority of them dont seem to give a toss, if that doesnt rile you then there must be something wrong. Weve been vocal and supported them all season and hasnt made a blind bit of difference realistically.. so can understad why fans arent feeling too vodal just now.

Your point about the increase in family atmosphere, increase in good support will come in time and hopefully the introduction of Dempster will go a long way in not only bringing more fans back which have become disillusioned with the club, but also go a long way to reaching out into the community and ER will be back rocking once again :agree:

I agree and I hope a manager is finally able to make ER a "fortress" rather something that, due to a desperately poor team on the pitch, resembles a sand castle built too close to the water...

I reserve high hopes for Dempster and TB, given time, should we stay up, but will not get ecstatic about anything until visible action is taken - players of a high calibre, fan initiatives left, right and centre.

I'll be there in person but I have to admit I am of the ilk where I can't bring myself to cheer/chant anything until we score or win as I've never looked on with such disdain before. I walk into the stadium, walk up the steps to the stands and I can feel the buzz (something close to me loves the feeling of going into ER and seeing the pitch) but this is zapped away instantly when the whistle goes. It then gets gradually displaced by a feeling of "what the **** was that pass about? how the **** could he not control that? get a ****ing tackle in! use your other ****ing foot that's what it's there for! use your head for something other than heading it back toward the opposition when you have time and space!!!". I will add, I never shout these at the players, the worst I have done is sighed and shook my head.

Did you spot some new tactics they introduced or another fringe player they brought in that Butcher doesn't know about? Maybe he was doing his homework when the fixtures were announced ages ago. Whatever he decides to do, I am skitterish about the outcome, but last minute research by him now bit late TBH and that dinner last night won't make a bit of difference. Anyone complaining about Butcher at the dinner would probably think the groundsman would pick a better team anyway so what are you bothered about? :greengrin

Just watched an interview with the Sunderland keeper on Sky and they mentioned after it when he let in that Nasri goal in the 2-2 draw which could have had a massive effect on the club remaining in the Premier, Sunderland fans stayed behind long after the game to chant the keepers name.
