Moving house at the end of next month and just had a quote of nearly £1000 for what is a fairly straight forward move. Yes it's a Friday we move and no doubt a busy day but seems a lot of money for a couple of men to load up a van and drive a few miles and then unload it.

I am thinking of just getting a man (or men) and a van to do the move as I cannot imagine they would be anywhere near that price.

Will also get some other quotes from the big firms to see how it compares.

Thanks, will have a look. Although the more I think about it I may be best hiring a van myself for a few days and doing it myself. I know it is stressful but I think paying £1,000 would be more stressful!

Broughton removals were flawless for us.

The £200 packing service was fantastic too.

We just relocated from Dundee down to Hampshire and did it ourselves. Hired a large van on a one-way and took care packing the van over a couple of days.

Much cheaper if you have the time to pack/unload everything.

Sounds absolutely ridiculous. Different country obviously, but the company I use here charge about 60 quid ($105 NZD or so) an hour, and that's it. Usually can get it done within 2 hours, although that's with not having too much furniture overall.

Still, what you've been told is the equivalent of what I'd pay here for 20 hours work!!

Moved house last week, used Pickfords, £850, yes expensive but the three guys were totally professional and the way they got the big stuff out, we'll I'd probably still be there!!! Just kept supplying them with tea and biscuits.
A move is always stressful but they certainly made it a lot easier.

I got charged £40 an hour for 2 men and a van.

This was a move from a top-floor flat in Leith to a house in Gracemount.

Took them just under 2 hours for the whole job, so £80. No complaints, done an excellent job, and have since carried out house-moves for 4 of my friends.

No idea how companies like Pickfords can get away with charging what they do.
