Hi fellow Hibee folks, looking for any advice on travelling to Oktoberfest 2014 in Munich by people who have done this before or know the city well. Specifically advice on hotels and where to book. Should be a party of 6 going along for my 21st which is during the week before opening weekend of the fest so 19th to 22nd is our imagined stay which gives us time to see a bit more of the city on the Friday too. I have seen return flights for £190 which isn't too bad but have yet to check other airports as that was just Glasgow I checked. So might get it cheaper elsewhere I'm not sure. However I'm also not sure if that is actually the best way to travel, would perhaps a ferry across to Holland and a train be easier (cheaper)? I have no idea.

As for hotels, would a city centre hotel be okay for travelling to the main beer tents on foot or would I be better off with a cheaper out of centre hotel & using the subway? And how much should I be expecting to pay for a hotel roughly? I have seen no hotels in the area where a lot of the festival is reportedly held but have read that it is close to the city centre anyway. There are a lot of packages out there but most look like either a rip off or like the hotels offered are right dodgy so decided to plan it myself but already got a sore head trying to work all this out.

Thanks in advance .net

Get accommodation for the group it will be dirt cheap. Loads to do in Munich. There is a great beach type area. Take the speedos.

Germany and Germans are where it is at and I live in Holland

That's what I've been looking at but I have one mate who needs to stay in a hotel rather than any kinda hostel or , god forbid camp , and one who must go on trip advisor for every potential hotel to see it's not disgusting so that is the source of my head ache - 20 year old prima donnas.

Hadn't read anything about the beach type area thanks! The more info I gather the better this idea sounds!

Easyjet fly Edinburgh to Munich - I'd imagine that would be the cheapest way to go. When I stayed in Germany I always got the train to Munich but since coming back I've flown Edinburgh to Munich and it was pretty cheap. Prices might go up in September because of Oktoberfest of course but I think they'll still be quite reasonable.

I can't really help with hotels. When I went to Oktoberfest a bunch of us stayed at a youth hostel, so don't really know about hotel prices.

Theresienwiese isn't right in the inner part/old town of the city centre - it would be about a 20-30 minute walk from Marienplatz but easiest way to get there is to jump on the U-Bahn.

The tents themselves can get really busy, especially it the weekend. We went to the Augustiner Bräu tent on a Tuesday - got there for it opening and it was pretty quiet but grew busier through the morning and by the afternoon it was packed. It's a really great atmosphere and you'll probably find you're sharing a big table with others, so as the beer flows people get more chatty and it's really good fun. And of course there's the obligatory drinking songs at regular intervals (get learning the words now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A57n_xGBA-E)!) When I was there last (2010) it was about 9EUR for a Maß but you're really expected to give 10EUR and let them keep the change.

Hope that helps a wee bit! I'm sure others will be able to tell you more about hotels!

Thanks for that will check up Easyjet just now as the flights from Glasgow all seem to include a stop off somewhere!

Thanks a hotel in the centre should be ideal though a 20 odd minute walk on the way back may be beyond some of us I imagine, so U-bahn sounds best as from what I hear taxis aren't keen on drunk tourists.

Yeah I had heard they get really busy so think we will make sure and be there for opening at least on the first day! Aye it all looks like a fantastic occasion and the way its laid out in the tents I am sure we'll all make some new pals! Going to brush up on my high school German! Cannot wait for the beer drinking songs, its something that is always lacking down my local pub. Had heard to expect to pay €10 for a drink which isn't too bad considering the volume and strength of the beer you get for that, all beers I won't have tried yet so looking forward to trying some traditional Bavarian and seeing which is my favourite.

That's a big help, thanks to you both should just need to find the right hotel at the right price and 2014 is looling good already :)

I was there this year as part of a Stag party, do not stay at a camp site as it is hell on earth.
The festival itself was top class but getting into the tents is impossible if you are not early.
A beer was between 9-10 Euros. Dont mess with the bouncers, they dont take prisoners.
Will defo go back, the Germans lay on great beer and food.

Getting there early seems to be a recurring theme for getting the most of the festival so will be keeping that in mind when there! Yeah I somehow imagine German bouncers to be a tough lot, they will be getting no hassle from our party though this trip's strictly no a***holes (my 21st so I can decide who can tag along ;)). Aye the food looks as big an attraction as the beer some fantastic stuff laid on by the sounds of it!

Thanks mate big help! Aye a 20 minute walk there is not a bother we'll be walking about plenty anyway hopefully see a bit of the city too. For the way back not sure I fancy trying to babysit folk up the road in a foreign city after a day on the beer though... some adventure that'd be!
