Decent article, but I think the point made right at the end about fans' attitudes towards their own team - 'here we are now, entertain us' - is worth more prominence.

I just don't think we as fans feel as connected to the players as is the past - we see them as little more than mercenaries with little real affection for the club they represent. Of course there are still exceptions, just as there were always players who only cared about the money in the past, but it feels difficult to have a real affinity with them.
