Any cryptic crossword buffs on here?
We feature in today's Guardian puzzle:
21 Sadly, Hibs wingers dismissed as "unprepared" (2-3)
The answer has nothing to do with fitba BTW, the compiler's just using a convenient combination of words, but the clue is uncomfortably close to reality :)

Take the words "Sadly Hibs"
Dismiss the 'wingers' i.e. get rid of the outside letters of each word (s,y,h,s) and you are left with adl & ib.
This spells 'ad lib' .... meaning off the cuff or 'unprepared'.

For those who don't quite follow.
Alan Sunderland scored the winning goal in the 1979 FA Cup Final (whilst we were drawing 0-0 with Rangers).
Ricky Villa scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final in 1981.

I was starting to think the Scotland-England game was the Berwick-Hibs game in which Iain Hendry broke his leg after 50 secs but couldn't see the Celtc/ Man U connection!

Good try, but no :greengrin
The player in question was Tommy Bogan.
Here's an extract from a feature I wrote on Hibs players that had worn the blue of Scotland
Tommy Bogan was pinched from under the noses of Celtic who were widely tipped to want the player before Hibs boss Willie McCartney used his undoubted charm to entice the striker to Easter Road in late 1943. Bogan found the net on a fairly regular basis for the greens but turned out to be quite possibly the unluckiest player ever to win a Scotland cap! Tommy was chosen to face England at Hampden in the wartime international held in April 1945 but lasted only 50 seconds before being carried off with torn ligaments in his left leg. His name entered into the record books, not necessarily because his participation was so limited but because it was the first time in an international match that a substitute was allowed!
His Wiki page is missing his Hibs details but these can be found here .......... http://www.fitbastats.com/hibs/player.php?playerid=6030
Wiki shows he played for Hibs, Celtic, Preston North End, Man Utd, Aberdeen, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers. Not too shabby that!

Just checked Wiki for Ronnie Simpson ..........
Simpson started his senior career with amateur club Queen's Park. He was first selected by their first team in 1945, aged just 14 years and 304 days.
