Does anyone know if doing a "Loyalist" (red hand of Ulster) salute is common among this lot or are they doing Nazi salutes? Shameful either way I guess.

Given the flag behind them and the fact that they are British soldiers, I'm almost certain that it's a red hand salute.

How does the Army deal with stuff like this?

The Daily Mail, and other papers might like to follow this story up by recalling recent events at Ibrox. The soldiers involved here are idiots, and no doubt will be reminded of this by the Army.

That would be a new one on me Beefster.

Also, taken from the article ................ Historian Ian S Wood, who has studied Ulster Loyalism for decades, said: ‘I’ve never seen or heard of anything called a red hand salute.’

It's not at all funny but does anyone remember the pictures of the Rangers fans in Tel Aviv waving Israeli flags whilst doing 'red hand salutes'.

It pretty much summed up the politics of most OF fans.

AFAIK the red hand is formed into a fist on the flag so a Nazi type salute doesn't quite fit the argument.

Bunch of knuckledraggers anyway :agree:

Bunch of knuckledraggers anyway :agree:It's a open right hand on the flag. I think i've seen a red fist on one of the loyalist gangster group flags.

You're right, of course. :agree:

I worked beside a guy who had the clenched fist version. He was one of the nastiest human beings it has ever been my misfortune to meet

The irony of the 'red hand salute' is that the red hand is actually one of the few Northern Irish symbols that is used by both nationalist and loyalist communities.

The red hand has it's roots in Irish Gaelic culture and never was, and still isn't, an exclusively Loyalist symbol.

:agree: I've had to explain the Red hand a few times to Rangers fans down here who were asking why they could see the (yellow) province of Ulster flag at Celtic park.

Ian is a season ticket holder at ER, sits beside me.you'll not find a guy more informed on the topic of NI, so if Ian says it doesn't exist, it doesn't exist.

An absolute gentleman too, which is more than can be said for his #3 son :greengrin

The boy has now said it was a Loyalist salute. So that's alright then?

What does that signify and why would the Loyalists choose a salute that was remarkably similar to the hitler salute?

Because they have fascistic tendencies? Shouldn't be giving a Loyalist or a Nazi salute whilst wearing the army uniform.

Or making whatever signs or symbolism that communists or Republicans adapt.

the whole sad story passes me by.

They proclaim to be the defenders of their country and defend what those did in 1945, yet a section of them stick it right up their backsides by doing that salute - whatever way you look at it. Brainless or hypocrisy? bit of both?
Try explaining that to a youngster!

A bit of both I'd say. I've heard Sevco fans try and defend their behaviour as a "red hand salute" - a salute which apparently doesn't exist.
