I can't see it working to be honest. It would cost a fortune to implament for starters, I would imagine a lot of people would see it as the government being too involved in their lives. The roads in the UK are nearly as safe as they have ever been in terms of deaths on our roads. I would prefer they worked on driver awareness and education. You just need to read the comments below the article to see why this won't get much further.

No more speeding fines and loads of redundant money making cameras, the government will never agree to it.

It would only work safely on motorways/dual carriageways where there's no risk when overtaking, other than that it could be very dangerous (when overtaking tractors on A roads for example).

It's a very... 'Brussels' idea, certainly.

I've always wondered why cars have never been restricted to 70 or 80 as a matter of course.

What happened to the good old "if it saves one life then it'll be worth it" attitude? They reckon it'll save 6000 lives a year! 6000!

If it was anything other than cars then people would be up in arms about something killing over 30 000 people each year and seriously injuring over 250 000.

There's good arguments for this so it has to be considered.

This. But you have to remember 1 thing a lot of the time it's the manner of the driving that's the contributory factor. People are killed not just because of speed but because of their driving ability or lack thereof.

Agreed. Don't think it will happen in my lifetime and I'm not sure if I'd want it to but the trend in technology is towards full automation. At some point car performance will cease to be a sales incentive and will be replaced by comfort, safety and environmental efficiency.

I don't think we'll see full automation any time soon, but I do think that all cars well eventually be fitted with GPS locators, monitored be satellite, with anyone breaking the speed limit for a period in excess of say 10 seconds being automatically 'nabbed'.

The technology already exists and is pretty inexpensive, all that's missing is the processing power to montor millions of cars on the move at any given moment - something I don't see being an issue in the near future.

I was watching top gear a while back and they were in japan testing a Nissan, the car was fitted with an electronic limiter that stopped people speeding, but if you took it to a race track the limiter automatically disabled itself allowing you to use the cars full power.

Funny enough the EU website says there's nothing in this story. Seems like another EU myth designed to whip up anti-EU sentiment.

If it stops idiots speeding ahead of you and potentially putting your life and others in danger, only to get stuck at the next set of traffic lights, then I don't see what the problem with this is.

Sounds like a decent idea to me, I've always wondered why we can buy cars that go significantly over the speed limit. If it annoys a few boy racers and bad drivers then I don't have a problem.

Cars are built for a gobal market. The speed limits aren't always the same in the countries they're sold in.

The BMW I had was restricted to 151 mph!

For the idea of GPS tracking to work fairly I think it would only be right if there was also a device/same device in the car that informed the driver of the actual (GPS) speed (s)he was doing and the limit for that section of road. The speedometer in cars is rarely accurate and the speed limit of the road not always obvious.

An issue I would have with this, if it was a real proposal, is the same as the current camera ones.

The main one being that the car owners who are responsible and keep all their paperwork up to date would be the ones paying the bill while the irresponsible ones who don't keep their paperwork up to date and IMO are more likely to disregard the [speeding] law get away with it as they cannot be traced.
