View Full Version : Celtic v Ajax
The days when Scottish clubs like ourselves get to the latter stages off euro comps have gone, probably forever.
Most other countries have overtaken us and i doubt there's a way back.
I'm not joining in with the"we have to support celtic to improve the co-effiwhatever"
It hardly makes a difference to also ran Scottish clubs anymore.
Celtic not making the group stages would (in a strange way)be better for Scottish football.
They wouldn't get the huge heap of cash and it would bring them back closer to the other Scottish clubs.
Maybe then the Scottish game wouldn't be the foregone conclusion it most certainly is right now.
C'mon Ajax.

This is nonsense on every level.
Any notion that competitiveness leads to an exciting league is nonsense look at every top league in Europe as evidence. Top drawer footballers who bring quality and press attention (due to their quality) is what improves a league.
Yes Celtic being poorer would bring the rest of the league closer. But i would rather see Celtic do well in Europe and improve the league as a whole using the following benefits.
The rest of the league playing against quality Celtic players will improve them as individuals.
Regardless of their place in Europe they will still be financially ahead of everyone else in the league.
Playing against poorer opposition gradually makes you a poorer player and vice versa.
ANY Scottish team who is successful in Europe gain bonus payments that are distributed to the rest of the league.
If Scottish teams do well in Europe. The rest of the league benefits from a greater chance of reaching Europa Group stages + the Bonuses for success in The Champions League.
Higher co-efficient = More Places in the European competitions. More places = more exposure + more attractive to potential signings + more money to sign better players.
The only reason someone should not want Celtic or any Scottish team to do well would be purely emotional and frankly pathetic.

One of my favourite teams outside of Scotland is Ajax so an easy decision for me.
Also, I've got Ajax in my accumulator - the odds are a respectable 2/1 - Ajax haven't been as good as they used to be this season but still they should have beaten AC Milan, Brown and Commons are out and Celtic aren't that good.
Hup Ajax!!

I was talking to one of the Celtc supporters in the office this morning, and I said, "A really big night tonight" to which he started on about how they needed to get a result and not be too concerned about Ajax and their strongarm tactics. Once he finished I said, "oh, is there football tonight, I was talking about the final of the Great British Bake Off tonight"
His face was a picture. I then said I would be surprised if Celtc kept it below 3.......

So:
- Celtc qualify for Group Stages
- Celtc receive circa £16m
- All other 'Premiership' clubs (although the article also confusingly states that the central pot is to be shared by all 42 senior teams) get an equal share of £1.5m
- So best case scenario is that hibs get just under £140,000. Less than a hundredth of Celtc's payout.
If that's shared success, you can keep it.
Cmon Ajax.

Celtic copy everyone - have ruined the Scottish game alongside their old firm sisters.
They moan about when Hibs players put in a tackle at the weekend - when they often bully us during games like the Scottish Cup Final.
The further they progress the more money for them - the bigger gap between the rest of us as they continue to buy our best players.
No thanks - come on Ajax - hammer them!

If Celtic failed to qualify for the group stages every year, it would definitely bring them closer to the other Scottish clubs. :agree:
In exactly the same way that if I stood on my garage roof, it'll mean the moon is closer to me!
I don't particularly care, but let's be clear, the ONLY way Hibs and other clubs can benefit is if Celtic qualify from the group.
We would get another windfall, they would be preoccupied with their European adventure, plus we might get more European places if the co-efficient improves.
If they get knocked out, they'll just try again next year.

Is the wanting Celtc to win thing the return of the "trickle down effect"?
That was the (now discredited) 1980's Tory theory that says it was good for the rich to get richer because some of those riches might "trickle down" to the poor people. Basically, everybody else should be happy to get the crumbs that fall off the table.
Sod that for a theory. I hope they get royally humped.

I consider myself a patriotic Scotsman and wish fellow Scots teams well. I was a temporary (armchair) supporter of Aberdeen and Dundee Utd for one day each when watching them in European Finals.
As I said, I would be happy for any SCOTTISH club (with the exception of Hearts) to do well in Europe.
However, here's a photo from the last time Celtc reached a European final. Answers on a postcard as to why I said "stuff them, I couldn't give a toss"

Think that's a good post - see no reason not to wish clubs of the same league/nation well when we're not involved, particularly when a good performance benefits the standing of our game abroad - hope Celtic do OK. Could be the fact I live abroad - I even like to see the English team doing well ... Having said that, I'll be watching the Arsenal - Dortmund game this evening, hope Dortumund win that one ... and I hope Schalke beat Chelski
