Sky sports for weeks have been referring to it as the "y" word. Surely saying the word yid whilst reporting news cannot offend anyone.

The word Yid is a slang Jewish ethnonym. Its usage may be controversial in modern English language. It is not usually considered offensive when pronounced, the way Yiddish speakers say it, though some may deem the word offensive nonetheless.

Supporters of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. adopted the nickname "Yid" (or "Yiddo") and often identify as "Yid Army". "Yid" is used as a badge of pride by the supporters of Tottenham Hotspur.

I've herd Spurs fans chanting "Yid army" and seen them with Israel flags. A Jewish term.

West Ham take it too far for me.

I've got plenty West Ham mates, they're my local team, I sometimes go to Upton Park, it's the one thing I don't like the Hitler and gassing songs - daft considering Hitler bombed the East End obviously

David Baddiel has a different view on it

As a Jewish bloke I think he has a right to be offended by the chant's.

When Spurs are being abused in song.

There are mentions for Hitler Belsen and gassing. Have been in company of Hammers fans are heard it sung. On a par i suppose with the 'Edinburgh' song - very offensive if you are Jewish.

They'll be banning "yam" next.

To be fair, I'd advocate that. "Yam" is criminally bad. I prefer my own term for them, the simple yet self-explanatory "flumps".

IMO, it's offensive no matter what your beliefs are.

Most things sung at football grounds are offensive to someone in some shape or form these days!

Much like Fenian, it's 'OK' if you're using it to describe yourselves apparently

(not that I'm advocating the word Fenian should be permitted by use!!!)
