Does she/he have benefits in kind?

As Pat says, it could be to tax benefits.

Or he/she could be due tax from an earlier year, and this is HMRC's way of collecting it.

Is he/she a higher-rate taxpayer?

Does he/she get child benefit?

They should have advised him/her of why they are using that number. If not, he/she should get on to them.

Ive been on a "K" code for well over a year ! Driving me nuts.
Phoned them maybe 8 months ago and it was suggested it was my fuel allowance from the previous year that wasn't taken off me.
I've not had the fuel allowance for nearly 2 years and just kept on hoping it would change back or i would get a rebate.

I WILL remember to call them next week :greengrin

The most likely explanation is that there are benefits they receive through thier employment that are taxable, Normally things like company cars etc but it could even be something like preferential rate mortgages or share schemes that is causing that.

What i can tell you though is that they have reduced the code by £550 so (assuming your partner is a basic rate taxpayer) that equates to £110 more tax your partner will be paying over the year if thats any help in identifying what it might be?

It's not about being "on benefits", it's about receiving "taxable benefits".

That could, for example, be her employer paying a gym membership for staff, or medical insurance. £550 pa, as has been said, would cover that.

My wife got 3 letters from HMRC this morning all telling her she was on a different tax code! They do not know what they are doing! I overpaid tax for about 4 years and HMRC sent me a letter saying I owed them a further £2,000. When I sat down and worked it all out going back 5 years I sent them the calculations that showed they owed me £2,000, cheque arrived few weeks later. You need to keep a really close eye on them.

For all your tax queries, feel free to PM my bad self. In spite of my relentlessly pish posts, I am actually quite an intelligent girl.
