Sounds very promising with Zouby getting 2 and Heffernan getting one in 3-1 win v a Rangers team. Run outs also for James McPake and Tim Clancy.

Promising that McPake and Clancy are on their way back, and the international break will help, but I still wouldnt rush them back into it. I can just see him picking them both next game and neither making it past half time...

Out of the whole squad does that just leave Cairney and Harris out injured?

RANGERS went down 3-1 to Premiership side Hibernian as a number of their players got back to action ahead of the home League One game with Arbroath next weekend.
In a specially-arranged closed-doors fixture at Murray Park, Richard Foster, Stevie Smith and Bilel Mohsni all started having not featured since the 1-1 draw with Newcastle on August 6.
Nicky Law and Jon Daly played in the friendly too, with the latter scoring in the first half to cancel out Abdellah Zoubir’s opener.
The on-loan Frenchman grabbed a second for Hibs to put them ahead again before Paul Heffernan sealed victory for the Edinburgh team.
Although it was a win the Easter Road outfit merited for the ruthless way they struck on the break, the scoreline was perhaps a little harsh on the Auchenhowie side.
Rustiness was certainly one reason for the reverse, with wasteful finishing and occasionally disjointed passing two others.
It was a contest in which a number of individuals who haven’t been appearing regularly were given crucial minutes.
And in that sense, the final outcome was disappointing but there were still positives to take from the 90 minutes as the Light Blues enjoyed plenty of the ball and competed well.
Arnold Peralta missed out because he’s on international duty with Honduras, Nicky Clark was a substitute and Cammy Bell was left off the bench in favour of Scott Gallacher.
That meant trialist keeper Steve Simonsen started along with Sam Kelly, who has also been training with the club recently.
David Templeton, Dean Shiels and Barry McKay were all included in the first XI in order to gain required match practice, with the same applying to Emilson Cribari.
Rangers began brightest and after Daly was flagged offside when Shiels released him, McKay fired over having been fed a good through ball by Law.
Foster also swung over a dangerous ball which away skipper James McPake had to react sharply to for the sake of stopping Templeton from connecting.
McKay looked hungry and did really well to knock the ball past McPake and skip around the other side then beat him for pace.
He almost got away from Tim Clancy as well to play himself in on keeper Sean Murdoch but the defender did just enough to muscle him off the ball when he looked to have got clear.
Gers were made to pay for not making the most of their early pressure when they fell behind just before the 20-minute mark.
Heffernan played a ball across the 18-yard line after holding up well and Ross Caldwell’s intelligent dummy gave Zoubir space in the area.
He only had Simonsen to beat and finished calmly to give his team an advantage against the run of play.
From there, it was very nearly 2-0 moments later as Sam Stanton’s free kick from the right smacked off the face of the near post when Simonsen thought it was going wide.
The rebound dropped kindly in front of goal but there were no away attackers there to capitalise and the hosts scrambled away.
Having looked in the mood initially, the Light Blues fell out of the game for a spell but they slowly came into contention again.
Mohsni broke the offside trap but was challenged as he went to shoot by McPake, with the Hibs player getting the benefit of the doubt when a penalty might have been given.
Daly followed that up with a leveller on 31 minutes, finishing well past the advancing Murdoch from 20 yards as he latched on to long ball up the channel first.
Shiels was then denied by the keeper and Daly put another attempt wide as Gers tried to go in front for the first time.
At the other end, Simonsen got down well to stop Zoubir from netting his second and held Stanton’s low shot too, meaning it was 1-1 at the break.
Rangers pressed again after the restart and McKay’s excellent footwork helped him beat two players and thread through to Shiels.
But rather than pick out Clark – on at the interval for Daly – he cut back to Templeton and it was the wrong choice as he was blocked.
Once again, the home team was punished as Hibs reacted well and went back in front as Zoubir cut in from the right and lashed home.
Clark tried to restore parity with a header from Smith’s cross but the ball was slightly too high and was always going to be difficult to convert.
And as Hibs broke upfield, they made it 3-1 when Heffernan passed into the net beyond Simonsen with a good right-footed finish.
That helped the visitors’ confidence and they began to look comfortable, with Clark’s header from fellow replacement Robbie Crawford’s cross on target but easily held.
Trialist Kelly should have had a penalty when he was taken out in the area but the referee somehow saw fit to wave away his claims instead.
And that summed up the way things were going for Gers, who had lots of the ball but weren’t getting breaks their way.
Kyle McAusland came on for Kelly and immediately found himself in on goal but he sent Clark’s pass wide.
Clark was then sent clear with a long ball through the middle and although he got there first, his first touch was weak and Murdoch got enough on it to avert the danger.
Rangers kept pushing, with Crawford’s strong shot blocked and Walsh putting past at the back post when he didn’t appear to expect the ball to reach him.
But it was one of those days for McCoist’s men when their endeavour didn’t result in the sort of end product the manager wanted.
On reflection, he’ll be unhappy with the goals his team conceded as they seemed to come a little too easily.
But in the same way as Rangers didn’t score due to a lack of sharpness, match fitness should deal with that to an extent and getting the game played will help towards that.
RANGERS: Simonsen; Foster, Mohsni, Cribari (Gasparotto 70), S Smith; McKay (Crawford 63), Law, Kelly (McAusland 70), Templeton (Walsh 63); Shiels, Daly (Clark 46).

It doesn't matter who we play a win is a win.
It is also something to build on, the team needs to breed confidence and if they can do that over the international break and ready for the restart to the league all the better.
Welcome to the Hibees Zouby and Heffernan well done lads.

SUBS NOT USED: Gallacher, Faure

The biggest bonus for Fenlon is that the guy doesn't understand a word of English so the Hibs fans can shout as much abuse at him as they give to our other players and he won't be any the wiser. :greengrin

The players have been really impressed by him and although it's only two bounce games the signs are encouraging.

The best part of him not understanding English, is that he'll have no idea what instructions Fenlon is giving him :) I wish none of them knew what Fenlon was telling them!!

Let's be positive and assume this is a sign of progress by Fenlon.

Last season we faced a third tier team in the League Cup and lost. This year we've again drawn a third tier side so he's arranged a practice match against another team from that division as preparation.

I was at a festival down here in Essex over the weekend where the Fratellis happened to be playing. As we queued up there was a scots boy in front of us and my mate asked where he came from...he's reply was Glasgow.

So my mate asks him as to what team he supports. His reply was "ay mate I support the gers". Who my mate asks? "The Gers!" Mate replies "hmm who?". By this point said Hun is getting rather annoyed.."you know! The gers! European champions! RANGERS!". Ahhhh my mate replies...got you now! You support newco rangers! Isn't it The Rangers now?"

The guy then turned to my mate and told him "get to **** before I hit ya!". They really are still hurting!! I'm so pleased with myself that I have taught my English friends the situation with scottish football. They have learnt well

REALLY?

This was a bounce game to give some injured players a run-out plus getting a couple of new signings game time.

A good idea which I'm not knocking.

And I'm very happy that we won the game rather than losing it - I live in North Lanarkshire and this might give me ten days or so respite from the mockery I'm having to put up with these days from "The Rangers" supporters.

For Clancy and McPake to get through the playing-time they did is also a good thing - but going on past experience I won't be convinced they're back and fit until they play a few fully competitive 90 minutes without breaking down. I really hope they do - the team needs them - and no one will be happier than I when they do.

But winning a friendly behind closed doors and suddenly everything's looking up? Please.

Zoubir plays a decent game against a League One side in a friendly and he's the new Boozy? Come on.

And yes, I would agree that being away from ER helps - the atmosphere in the stadium these days is hardly conducive to the home team playing happy, relaxed football. Though I concede that the only way to sort that is for the home team to start scoring goals and winning games there.
