Going out and driving do you:
1. Never touch a drop of alcohol and stay on the soft drinks.
2. Drink non alcoholic beer because it makes you feel part of things rather than soft drinks.
3. Drink shandies and equate a couple of pints to being safe.
4. Have two pints as your absolute limit.
5. Have one pint as your absolute limit.
6. Drink low alcohol beer/wine and judge when you're safe
7.. Think you know how many drinks you can safely have and judge depending on what you're drinking.
8. Use your own breathalyser before deciding to get behind the wheel
9. You'd rather not incriminate yourself by answering.

1 for me. I personally don't see the point in having one pint, I never feel like I'm missing out I think it's more other people worrying that your feeling left out that bugs me. Drink/drug driving are my pet hates, I do however feel sympathy for people caught out the next morning.

I'll occasionally have a single bottle of beer but most of the time stick to soft drinks.

Do you really? I don't, I think the responsibility to ensure you're safe enough to drive the next morning is exactly the same responsibility you have when deciding to drive on a night out.

If i'm out at a social event that is likely to involve drinking I jus don't take the car.
If I do have the car for any reason I usually just drink soda and lime, maybe have one bottle of beer but usually not that bothered.
Non alcoholic beer like Kaliber and Becks Blue always gives me a horrendous headache for some reason.

I just don't feel it's quite the same thing, although even saying that I'm questioning myself, I think it's probably just not as deliberate an act. If that makes any sense

Never take the car if I'm drinking, if I'm driving to a social event I have 1 coke, any more I get an upset gut, a couple soda limes then just sparkling water.
Don't understand folk that go out for a drink taking the car, maybe I just don't have the self discipline to stop at two!

Most Hibs games i'll take the car and normally have a pre match pint, sometimes a pint and half max. Never take the car anywhere if i'm planning on drinking more.

i could count on one hand the last time i had a pint of beer when out the last 4/5 years, but i normally have the car anyway, instead i drink a bottled beer called 'becks blue' , non-alcoholic and a nice taste :agree:

Non alcoholic beer for me. I'd lose my job if I were to turn up and had alcohol in my system so I don't even have a couple the night before working.

I don't have a car so don't really have to worry about it but it'd be 1 for me.
I reckon I was over the limit once, it was about 6pm the evening after a night out.

I play a lot of weddings and functions in a band and usually have one pint at the start of the night as it is usually 1am before we are packed up to leave and it's been at least 4 hours since the pint.
If on a night out it's softies all the way. Been to a few nights out where I've decided to have one pint, and ended up getting a taste for it and getting bladdered and leaving the car to pick up the next day.

The morning after is a difficult one. I know of one case in my work where the guy had pulled into a petrol station and was filling up when a woman came in too fast and hit the back of the van. Not sure how the police were involved but he was deemed to be a shade over the limit.... He got a caution (was a few years ago right enough so will be different now I guess) but ended up losing his job.
Oh and as to the OP
I occasionally have 2 pints if its spread across a whole evening (was even breathalysed one Christmas after a works do and was perfectly clear, just a trace)... If its not a whole night thing then it's one or more often a soda water and lime.

I don't drive, so not an issue for me. However, all my mates don't even bother touching the stuff if they are driving nowadays. One notable exception back in his younger days but he has cut that out now thankfully.

If I'm out for a meal one small glass of wine, other than that softies all the way, just not worth it.
If I want to have more than one drink I leave the car at home.

Beck's Blue is not bad if it's cold. Also Beck's do a 2.3% one I think which is good too. Not sure how many of them would be allowed before hitting the limit. Best not to experiment..

If I'm driving I don't drink alcohol at all. My cousin, a good Hibby, was knocked down and killed by a drunk driver a few years ago leaving 4 kids without a dad including a 2 and 1 year old. Used to have a pint before that but I don't have that now.

No but they do think that if you read the OP properly and look at the options you might be less confused, unless of course you have been drinking heavily and it's all a blur!

Here are some guidelines that make for interesting reading regarding the day after.
Below is a guide to help you calculate when you should stop drinking if you are driving the following day.
4% beers and ciders - Average strength drinks like Fosters and Guinness are two and half hour pints. Each pint takes at least two and half hours to leave your blood stream from when you stop drinking. Therefore if you have four pints and stop drinking at midnight, you are not safe to drive until after 11am the next day.
5.5% beers and ciders - Stronger drinks like Stella, Kronenberg and Strongbow are three hour pints. Drink four pints of Stella and you can't drive for at least 13 hours from finishing your last pint. So if you call it a night at midnight you are not safe until after 1pm the next day.
5% bottles – 330ml bottles of Becks, Bud, Stella, or 275ml bottles of WDK, Smirnof Ice are two hour bottles. Drink six of these up till midnight and you are not safe until after 1pm the next day.
Wine - One 250ml glass of 13% wine is a three and a half hour drink. Drink a bottle of it and you'll need to leave 11 hours before driving or 11am if you stop at midnight.
Spirits - A double shot of a spirit is a three hour drink. Drink three of these and you will need to leave 10 hours before driving, meaning that if you finish drinking at 11pm you are not safe to drive until 9am the next day.
This safety advice is offered as guidance only.

Not at all, I roughly follow those guidelines and have done for several years.4 pints in a night and you can't drive for 11 hours after you finish the last one? Rather than being legal that more like alcohol being totally out of your system and probably by a few hours.

If I'm going out to a social event with lots of drinking I'll simply not take the car but if I have no choice then I'll have 1 pint maximum. I had two once but was informed that I'd probably be over the limit so have never done it again - I thought two pints was the limit for Fosters at the time...
I was out for lunch yesterday with family for a birthday and just drank Coke and Peppermint Tea since I was giving others a lift home afterwards.
Edit: Just seen the 'next day' guidance posted above. Sounds about right, it's been tea time the following day (or even later) sometimes that I've only just felt ok to drive - but that's been after a hell of a night!

Each to their own, that's what I practice and I know confidentally when I get behind the wheel that I am not over the limit. Far too many stories of folk getting caught the morning after believing they were okay.
I drive for a living so it's just soft drinks if taking the car.

Across here the police don't need an excuse/reason to breathalyse you - they just set up road blocks and stop whoever they want Last year I was breathalysed 6 times (including 3 times in a period of 5 weeks). It could have been more as one Fiday afternoon I was stopped twice in the space of 10 minutes when driving home from work - the second lot didn't test me after I moaned at them and showed them my plastic nozzle thingy. On one of the other occassions I'd had 5 half pints (remember it's France!) over a 3-4 hour period one sunday afternoon. I deliberately stopped 'drinking' more than 2 hours before I hit the road but that didn't stop my ringpiece twitching when I saw the roadblock (after a bend on a one way street - tossers!) about 300 yards from my house - however the machine registered only a negligible trace of alcohol.
Generally though I keep to about a half pint per hour, with a maximum of 3 (maybe 4 if it's over a longer period).
It also depends on your metabolism, how much sleep you've had and what you've had to eat. They do need a reason to breathalyse you....
It either has to be a moving traffic offence ie dodgy light, manner of your driving etc, they suspect alcohol ie smell alcohol on your breath or you've been involved in a road traffic accident.
You would get the reason when they gave you the warning prior to breathing into the machine.
Just don't drink alcohol and drive.

In effect they can stop you at an organised checkpoint speak to you and breathalyse as they do during the festive period.
What you've had to eat makes no difference once you have a skinful and are over the limit, it only benefits you when you're drinking, a full fry up after the fact does nothing to remove the alcohol from your system.

I'll rephrase the eating park SH. If you've had a good nose bag, normal sleep etc you could have say 2 pints and possibly be ok.
On another given day you could do the same and be over.
As for the stop points. Yip done to prevent anyone trying to do one.

And he gets another ban to run concurrently with the one he previously ignored. Sheriff says a jail term would be bad for his health, but what about every other buggers health while he's free to ignore his driving ban. They should confiscate his car and crush it while he sits behind the wheel.
