Only watched the Sopranos on box set in the last year or two. Fantastic, memorable TV and very sad to hear today's news.

Sad news, especially for his wife and kids. His place is TV history is cemented though - it'll be a while before a character as great as Tony Soprano comes around again.

:agree: I think his kid is only one year old

Sopranos: Has to be one of the best tele programmes ever

Fantastic actor who did a lot more than just Tony Soprano, but even if that had been the extent of his career, what a character.

Feel for his wife and son, as well as the numerous career opportunities now missed. An actor whose presence in a TV series or film always made me think"this will be good".

Yup. Very fine character actor, with a lot of good films behind him. Like you say, if he's on the cast list, I would assume that the film will be worth watching. Haven't been disappointed yet.

Loved The Sopranos. Will be sadly missed.

Truthfully though what shocked me most was that he was only 51. He looked much older and not particularly healthy either.

I'm a huge Sopranos fan ... must have watched the box set at least 5 times. A work of genius with the central character brought to life by as brilliant a bit of acting as you will ever see. I was genuinely brought to tears when I heard the news this morning, as much for Tony Soprano as for James Gandolfini. Sad but true, hopefully enthusiasts of the series will know what I mean.

If you have never seen the Sopranos I envy you ..... get out and buy the box set you will not be dissappointed. Every part is brilliantly played and brilliantly written.

R.I.P. Mr Gandolfini

A big loss. His death (the age, the manner) is similar to my father, and Mrs IH and I watched the entire box set only recently.

We both remarked yesterday about the similarity and how sad we felt about 'Tony's' passing - proving how great an actor he was.

If you haven't yet seen The Soprano's, then go and buy the box set.

His family will probably need the royalties soon enough.

They'll be devastated.

:agree: I can totally relate to your first paragraph. Reading the newspaper obituaries today it seemed as if everyone was mourning the death of Tony, not James Gandolfini the real actor. I found myself doing the same, I was thinking; 'that lifestyle probably did for him; the panic attacks, all those Montecristos and goombahs cant have been good for his health', forgetting that in fact Tony didnt exist. I suppose that itself is a testament to what a grest actot he was, how he made that character seemed real.

It was only when I read the sad news that Gandolfini's 13 year old son found him dead in the hotel that it sunk in that it was a real life tragedy for a real life family.

I used to go to a fitness bootcamp earlier in the year and I still get marketing emails from the guy who runs it.

I received one of these emails this morning and he was using the death of James Gandolfini as a marketing tool along the lines of 'if you don't get into a strict exercise regime you will probably die just like him'. It talked about his unhealthy lifestyle. It then went on to say there were deals if you signed up soon.

I could see the point but thought it was slightly in poor taste to be using it to help drum up some business.

It is poor taste, and a nonsense argument. Reminds me of Jim Fixx. You can Google him but Bill Hicks sums it up here. (Content has some swearing)

I missed The Sopranos the first time round so I've been watching it from the start. Think I'm about 10 episodes into season 1, and it's superb. Wish I'd watched it when it first came on.

Lucky man, it just gets better and better. I have watched the full box set a couple of times. Think I may need to dig it out again.
