International football often promises so much but fails to deliver in the entertainment stakes, lost count of how many World Cups have disappointed me after I've eagerly anticipated the tournaments starting. Brazil often fall into the same bracket for me.

Argentina are 10 times better. Columbia are 5 times better and Chile/Uruguay are slightly better. Brazil are rubbish and if they had to qualify they'd be in the playoffs at best.

Unlike some of the previous Confederation Cups, this will be a really interesting one. Brazil will be really going for it, as hosts and with the World Cup next year. The South American teams always take these things more seriously as they have an inferiority complex re Europe, mostly stemming from relative strengths of club football. I think Brazil will reach the final. The nightmare scenario for them will be if they play Uruguay in it. If they lost it would destroy their confidence for next year and cast up the ghosts of 1950...

In Rio sat & sun. before heading off back to work, all these turkeys that slate Scotland & Scotland supporters should try being somewhere like here & experiencing the atmosphere, the sheer joy of Football & loving the Beautiful game, you just cannot help but have a huge grin on your face in amongst all this, this is where every Football fan who seriously loves the game should be, it really is tremendous & I am genuinely sorry for all the fans who will not be in Brasil next year for the finals, I am still to decide if I am going to go along & support Brazil next year or get 3 X tops of Englands opposition & go to them games with my Kilt on & enjoy the world cup that way, for what its worth regarding the current Brasil team, I reckon they are about 1 commanding midfielder & possibly 1 X more defender away from being right up there in the mix.

I'll bite :greengrin For the last year, Brazil have been very poor; inconsistent, unmotivated, unsure of what everyone was doing on the pitch tactically, team formations which didn't work, so I do still think that criticism of them from me and others on here has been justified. However, they do look to be settling, finally, and I now agree that if this progress continues, they have a decent (but not stick on) shout next year. So, to sum up: previous criticism = justified - current optimism = also justified. There, you can throw me back in the sea now :greengrin

There seems to be an attitude that South American players aren't to be rated until they "prove" themselves in Europe. Then when they do (e.g. Messi), they can't be rated until they've done it in the World Cup.

Neymar has been doing this stuff for quite a while now, and I really don't think Barcelona would pay out nearly £50m (and then slap a release clause of more than £160m on him) for a player who isn't the finished article.

And IIRC the player who wears the #10 shirt for Santos and Brazil (what was the name of the guy who used to wear that shirt back in the 60's?) is usually a reasonably decent footballer.

'Course, he isn't Hibs class.

Thought Japan out worked them, unlucky.

Maybe we should make all the players wear pedometers, and the team that covers the most distance in total wins the game regardless of who scores most goals?

They were a tad unlucky in hitting wood the post and the bar near the end of the game, but Italy also hit the post at the end of the first half and could be considered unlucky not to be going in level at half-time.

Any team that fights back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, concedes an equaliser, defends successfully under great pressure for at least 15 minutes towards the end of the game, then breaks out to score a clinical and very well-worked winner deserves credit for their victory.

Forza Azzuri! :not worth

I'm struggling a bit this morning after being up so late but it was well worth it for that game. Really wanted Japan to win it, if Kagawa had scored the chance at 3-3 I think they would have went on to win it. Japan were fantastic, the close control and possession play was sublime. They would take 5 or 6 off Scotland.

Looking forward to Spain v Tahiti tonight :greengrin

Im still not convinced, I've made a habit of watching him in a lot of games due to the hype, he is great at times but at others he is non existent

With the amount of time on the ball they get Barca is a good move but i don't think him and lionel will be able to play in the same team, Zlatan all over again i feel

Neymar is still a young developing player, he has quite a good goal scoring record and some serious talent. He will only improve at Barcelona and will fit right in on one side of their attacking 3. Far better than Sanchez IMO.

In some cultures teams don't go straight for the kill and look to embarrass their opponents. For example in the USA they have things like a mercy rule in younger age categories to stop games if they become very one sided, this breeds it into the players that embarrassing the opponent is not worth it as they are fellow sportsmen. I think Spain and Portugal have a similar philosophy, for example Paulo Sergio demonstrated that in the cup final in 2012. I think Spain will take 6 goals but keep the ball for about 85% of the match rather than thumping Tahiti.

Who are you referring to when you say "are you suggesting England are aware"?

England fans who actually follow football = are aware of the England teams shortcomings and know exactly where the team stands in world terms.

English Media= also know the shortcomings of the team but do their utmost to foster a spirit of anticipation and get the nation behind the team as any nations media should do.

English public = many don't have a clue and are swept along on the media frenzy ultimately believing that we have a chance of winning something when we don't.

English commentators = or those who I refer to as non English "We" commentators annoyingly don't have a ****** clue half of the time IMO.

English players= they have to give it all and make the right noises whatever their true feelings

Scouse Hibee= He just loves the banter.

Think Brazil will win but only because Spain are dead on their feet. Been a great experience for them and sets them up great for next year having now experienced playing tournament football in those conditions and that heat. Reckon Argentina are the only team who can stop them and the Brazilians will love that :greengrin.

What heats that then! Its winter in Brazil the now, Spain at the minute will probably be about 5-10 degrees warmer than central Brazil. Argentina is even further south, no be much different fi Scotland.

Think its the humidity that's the problem, also being a massive country a few games are getting played in the amazon region and I'm sure the heat and humidity will be a problem

Believe it or not, it can get very cold at this time of year in Brazil. The temp can drop from 20+ during the day to anything as low as 1. The drop gets worse the further south you go, so Rio won't be so bad. Remember, Brazilian homes don't have carpets or central heating, so you really blooming feel it when its cold. (I'm talking constant tea drinking, 5 blankets and wearing hats at night to sleep level of cold)

Uruguay aren't the same when they aren't playing like cynical animals. Those were the days. Total carnage guaranteed every time they played back in the day.

Their Football Association is "Futball Uruguayo" - or for short, "FU". Seems appropriate.

I fancy them as outsiders next year.

They do really good flags in Uruguay -

You are aware it was over 30 degrees with 94% humidity for the Spain v Italy game .

It touch and go if Uruguay are even gonna make it next year. Think the best they can do is make the playoff.

Aye being as I'm in Brazil the now, Rio area, I am aware, and when I am in Spain in just ower a fortnight I know it will be a good bit hotter in Spain just like last year. Never had probs wi humidity here, but I've never got north o Vitoria so cannae comment on Fortaleza or Salvador, but I just cannae see +30 C bein much of an issue for yer average Espanhola.

There's a difference between existing in that heat and playing football in that heat. There is a reason most La Liga games are played in the evenings.

I suppose working 12 hour shifts for 28 consecutive days in "that heat" doesnae qualify me tae answer though, eh?

Why are you getting pissy and defensive?

I've no idea what you do but is it on the same level as intensive exercise in an enclosed arena (which amplifies both temperature and humidity) for 90 minutes?

The Spanish season runs from October (where the average maximum temperature through the day is 21C) to May, where again the average maximum temperature is around the 20s. Bearing in mind that it can be much cooler in the evenings (to allow the players to play in comfortable conditions, nearer the low to mid teens) and suddenly playing in temperatures of 30C is exerting.

Defensive? Nah. I just know I will have just spent 41 days in Brazil doin allsorts, next is 12 days in Spain, I'm no exactly Michael Fish but I know where it will be plenty hotter, and it wont be central Brazil in June/July. At Christmas in Rio when it was 40+ was a different story, but it's no December now. If you'll excuse me, I've got to go to work in "that heat".

So you'll know it's to be around 22 degrees at kickoff time tonight with 75% humidity. Great weather for football eh. Anyhow, think you'll find I actually said that I fancy either the Spanish or the Argies to win it next year because of the weather and that being there this time around will only help the Spanish out, whether they win tonight or not . As hot as it is in Spain at this time of the year I'm pretty sure they don't play in June, July or August and as already pointed out, when they do play, they play at night.
