Gentlemen, the week ahead sums up exactly what it means to be a Hibee.

We've all tasted bitter defeat before, knowing what it means to come so close to achieving the ultimate yet falling short at the moment it matters.

We learn from this yet we never let our heads overrule our hearts. Each year when the odds seem longer than the previous we turn out in our numbers in the sheer hope that we might just achieve what we have failed to do for over a century. Some of us were born as Hibees, some of us chose to become a Hibee but we all share that burning optimism, that nagging feeling that this year just might be the year.

Some former members of the Hibee family may have given into temptation previously to follow one of the Old Firm with the promise of trophies and glory. Perhaps they have felt justified having seen this success over the years but they will never be able to know what it is to be a Hibee, that knowledge that although the mountain ahead of us may seem an impossible mission we will not give up and even if we do not succeed in the end we will have stuck to our founding values and remained true to the green and white, nor will they ever feel the same anticipation that when the Hibernian choir congregates at Hampden park on the 26th of May to lift those lucky enough to wear the shirt of our club that they may just find themselves at the top of that mountain, on top of the world.

Those who will fill the other half of Hampden are there out of expectation, not hope, not belief. They will never know what it is to believe in the unbelievable and to not give up hope when the odds are against them.

Enjoy the next week, because that hope and that belief in the unthinkable that each and every one of us share is exactly what it means to be a Hibee.
