The left will be kicking off big style here in Berlin tonight. Always makes me chuckle to think that they're traditional working man's public holiday was first introduced by a certain Mr Hitler.

Never knew that. I have always associated it with Pagan times being the start of spring or something.

I was in South Korea on Mayday one year and they made a really big deal of it there with street parties and a public holiday. At first i thought this was surprising, bearing in mind its a capitalist country with a hostile communist neighbour to the north. Then i came to the conclusion that perhaps it has nothing to do with politics, and just represents a more healthy respect for the working class, certainly compared to the UK and US where mayday has been sidelined recently.
Happy May Day everyone

Pagan roots: like all the best holidays. Marks the start of the summer and rejuvenation.
May Days are celebrated all over the country and well beyond and have been so for a long time before folk were calling themselves socialists.
