Surprised at this! Apparently Wigan have 10,000 FA cup tickets unsold.

Why are you surprised by this?

Why would anyone be surprised by this piece of information that has nothing to do with anything

To be fair, they are a small club that has managed to stay in the top flight for a few years after moving up the divisions. The town is more a rugby town but due to the football team being a lower league side, most football fans followed nearby Liverpool, Man U, Everton, etc.
I'm sure in years gone by they only got crowds of a couple of thousand

Pretty surprised that an EPL team have less glory hunting one game a season wonders than we do!

A predominantly rugby league town, about 100k population, Wembley is a fair distance - all this goes some way to explaining why.

They'll sell out the final if they get there.

They've sold about 20,000 tickets (which is about their average home attendance) for a semi final that's being played more than 200 miles away from their town.

I don't think it's too much of a surprise.

As someone else has said already, if they beat Millwall and get to the final then they'll have no problems in selling their allocation.

Original allocation was 31,000.
Town population is 80,000.

And yet it's a surprise that close to 40% of the entire population haven't bought tickets for a game that is 200 miles away? I'm sure that the good folk of Wigan are ashamed of themselves. :embarrass

Hope they can pull out a surprise and win the whole thing. Got family in Wigan so been to a few of their games, would be nice if they stay up that next season they have a good start to the season rather than leave it late.

Particularly since it's predominantly a rugby town, and is situated in a region that is probably more densely populated with professional football clubs than anywhere else in the entire world.

For shame. :bitchy:

They've sold more than we have for a semi witch is more than 3 times the distance away. I'd guess the population of Edinburgh is a hell of a lot bigger than Wigan. Good on them, would be very easy to follow one of the Manchester Liverpool clubs if you were from Wigan.

Apparently the last train back to Wigan leaves an hour after KO.

It does irk me that these two bit tiny clubs have all the money of the Premiership, while elder statesmen of the Scottish game like Hibs live on scraps.

Wigan are a club punching well over their weight, something i wish we could do as much as they have, for as long as they have.

I was at the Luton Wimbledon semi in 1988 and there were c25,000 there in White Hart Lane.

Probably 20,00 Luton with 5,000 Dons fans. Was a weird atmosphere in a half empty stadium.

(off topic, but when Wimbledon went on and won the cup, beating Liverpool, it was and still is regarded as a truly great upset - even though Wmbledon finished 7th in the top division that year).

Not entirely true, as there are some pretty sizeable outlying suburbs. Thankfully Leigh isn't one of them with very few Latics fans, even with it being only 8 miles down the road.

I did think I'd escape from this ticket malarkey coming on here though, for those who know my workplace

I honestly thought that Wigan was much bigger than that, it is only the size of Bolton:confused:

'Wigan sell fantastic number of tickets for FA cup despite being from a small, Rugby League oriented town'?

The 80,000 is just for Wigan 'central'. Include Hindley, Standish, Ashton-in-Makerfield and the like and it's nearer 200,000 in the end.

A city/town's population is not always the best indicator of potential fan base.

Manchester only has a population of about 435,000 or something like that which is very similar to Edinburgh. The Greater Manchester area however has about 2.5 million where as the "greater" Edinburgh area (to include the Lothians) is only about 800,000.

I'd still say that the Edinburgh teams, given the size of population of the city, are poorly supported.

I don't think you can compare the 2, wigan benefited from an owner pumping in millions of pounds to get them established. Since he's stopped throwing money at them they've struggled every season almost. They also get millions of pounds a year from sky. What they have done that we haven't is find a phenomenal young manager and managed to keep him

There hasn't necessarily been any reduction in funding, it's more that the richer owners in the Premier League are a world away from the sort of money that DW can spend.

There was considerable investment in the new Stadium.

I suspect that Wigan are financially self-sustaining and will remain so as long as they stay in the Premier League.

If they go down and are unable to bounce back quickly then they could be in financial problems once the parachute payments cease.

Bigger clubs than Wigan have ended up dropping two divisions in quick succession: Man. City, Aston Villa, Nottm. Forest, Sheff. Wednesday, Sheff. United, Wolves, and maybe Blackburn Rovers?

They have come a long way in the last 30 years from their Northern Premier League days.
